1998 dodge ram 2500 v-10 is banging when putting into gear
Check gearbox oil level and condition. torque converter sounds faulty but you need to take it to a gearbox specialist
If you've had it to a specialist and they didn't diagnose it they can't be that special. I don't know enough about your vehicle to comment further other than to suggest it could be the clutch mechanism. My honda has a fancy clutch mechanism that occasionally bangs when I put the power on too fast after coming to a near stop.
The question is...does it bang as it engages gear or is it banging all the time?
if it's all the time its a torque converter/gearbox problem that requires serious attention, if it only on engaging then it's likely to be related to the clutch but as there are a few different auto box designs and I don't know your vehicle well I can't comment further. sorry.

SOURCE: 1998 dodge 1500 wont shift
first of all standard or auto i am guessing its standed standard under drivers side hood near master cylinder there is a small clutch reservoir if there isnt enough fluid it wont extend the throw out bearing far enough for a shift because the clutch pedal is hitting the floor not enough fluid to extend the slave cylinder to drive the fork second faulty slave cylinder or throw out bearing as far as the light blown dash bulb or somone snipped the wire or took the bulb out

you may have a faulty or weak clutch master and or slave cylinder

You will need to get the transmission rebuilt. With the info that you have provided the direct clutches are welded together. Becareful about getting it rebuilt, most shops see Dodge transmissions and they see dollar signs. You should be able to get it rebuilt for around $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on amount of damaged hard parts. Thanks and good luck with your repair.

The '97 Ram 1500 5.9L 4x4 Transfer case was a Dana mfg unit (interchange # 412-00361 I think). The chain and gears would need to be replaced to correct this. Usually the labor and price of the parts cost more than replaceing the entire assembly depending on how much damage in the case has occurred. You can same a little if you can do the work yourself but the end price comes down to time, ability and cost.
