Question about 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

Knocking While Accelerating

When I accelerate I hear a knocking sound coming from the drivers side of the car. I cannot tell whether it is directly under me or if it's in the engine. It only happens while moving and while I am accelerating. What could the problem possibly be and is it possible to fix it without seeing a mechanic?

I just put it in drive, stepped on brake and gas and it still knocked. When in neutral I did not hear any knocking. This started 4 days ago and has gotten worse. If it is the timing, would it get worse or could that be another problem?

  • guardian.326 Nov 10, 2008

It is a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutless Cierra. It has 133k miles on it. I drive back and forth from classes everyday, and they are about 15 miles away. I don't take it above 70 mph, and I only go that high when I have to take the highway. I do not run it hard because it is an older car. I do not hear a ping with the knocking. There is a click from inside the engine when its idling, which from what I understand could just mean that I need to have my valves checked. But that started today.

Hi guardian.326 I need some more info try putting the vehicle in drive step on the brake and accelerator at the same time and see if knocks then. If so first check the timing on your vehicle, hope this helps, good luck

Hi guardian.326 how old is the car,how many miles on it etc. If it was a bearing knock (main bearings) it would be there all the time, It could be a few different things but for now I think that timing will be the issue from what you have described. one more question: when you accelerate along with this knock do you hear a pinging sound?

Guardian.326, all that is needed to check your timing is a timing light, I would not think a mechanic would charge you just to check it out, if it is timing it will be slightly retarded and need to be advanced, to adjust this takes 2 minutes good luck and let me know how you make out and we'll go from there

Guardian.326 the first thing you need to do is get the timing checked, the clicking you hear is probably lifter noise. Make sure the oil is good and get the timing checked ok, thats the cheapest place to start then let me know whats happening ok, I think that will fix your problem, good luck to you.

KNOCKING FROM DRIVERS SIDE

If it happens under heavy acceleration, and it is a true knocking, I would try the CV Axle (constant velocity). Typically it has a boot around it that will be torn. may also want to check ball joints for more of a popping sound. if its coming from the actual engine, may want to check into the rod bearings.

CV joint - wheel side needs to be replaced :) right wheel, a lot of people drive like that for a while before they fix it so don't worry, also it shouldn't be soooo expensive

I would need to hear the noise to give you any idea of what is causing it. Have a local dealer or trusted shop go for a ride with you, in may cases this is not charged for.

2005 trailblazer knocking sound front drivers side wheel when accelerating only

First check wheel bearing. Jack front end up lifting tires off ground and see if the wheel moves by pulling on the sidewall part of wheel from top and pushing bottom towards the car does this back and forth if there is play, wheel bearing could need replaced. Take tire off and check for loose brakes, loose calipers, loose dust shields , etc. everything except rotor should be tight.

Knocking noise from tires when accelerating

The noise may be your driveshaft ujoint going bad making the noise when you speed up,turn your driveshaft back and fourth by hand and see if it makes any noise. Jim Riley said that.

Knocking sound when accelerating

Where is the knocking coming from? The engine or the transmission? Can you feel the knocking, or just hear it? If you can feel it, is it in the steering wheel or do you feel it in the seat, or the whole car? Is your check engine light on? Let me know, I will try to help. Went through the same problem recently, and even though I have worked on my own cars all my life, it takes a little detective work to find out what is wrong on your own with these newer cars. It could be anything from an unbalanced tire, to valve problems, but there are ways to check and eliminate things. Give me all the info you can, and I will give you the best advice I can. e-mail: jakel1_1@netzero.net.

When I accelerate quickly, there is a knocking/clicking type noise coming from engine area

uh oh, this may not be good. If the sound you hear is actually a "knock" sound that only occurs under hard acceleration, it is quite possible that a main bearing on the crank or connecting rod bearing for the piston is going bad. If so be the case, have this issue addressed ASAP because a failing bearing will not last that long at all...and when the bearing fails, your motor stops. If it is still under warranty take it to the dealership immediately to have the problem fixed.
