Question about 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Car won't start wants to turn over but nothing.

Was driving and heard a knock sound. pulled over checked fluids such as oil and coolant was low. added coolant and started driving again. The car wanted to stall at red lights, I noticed a lot of smoke coming out the back of the car at the red light. So I pulled over and checked the fluids again. I had to add more coolant. Started to drive again and heard knocking again pulled over and the car never started again after that. The check engine light turns on when you put the key to the run position. The light then flashes 10 times and stays on. The oil light stays on as well. please help me. Thanks Chuck

So were do I start to see if this is the problem. I did some work on my 90 5.0 but this car is not the same. I have changed a head gasket before in the mustang, because I had water in the oil. I'm not seeing the same thing as I did in the mustang. Like the color of the oil was milky in the mustang this one is not.

Now what about the check engine light flashing 10 times? Pulling the plugs on this year pt is a pain because of the stupid design that they did with the plenum on the top of the engine. Is that about the only way to diagnose a blown head gasket?

Pulling the plugs is a pain, but not as bad as it looks. You have to remove the upper intake by disconnecting the egr tube(two small bolts hold it at the rear of the intake), pull a couple vacum lines, then disconnect the small row of retaining bolts at the front holding the upper intake to the lower. These have all rubber resuable gaskets in the intake ports so you dont even have to buy new ones. You should be able to acess the two outside plugs without pulling the intake if you only need to check for coolant on the plugs, but if your changing the head gasket all this **** has to come off anyway. Good Luck.

Sounds like you have a blown head gasket this would explain loss of coolant and running poorly excessive smoke.

pull your plugs will probably see coolant on of of them. you will not realy see milky oil if the coolant passage blows into the cylinder.

it is not too bad of a job I just did one one an 02 pt i bought cause of this same issue

it is flashing because it sees a problem and if driven further damager can result. see if your getting compression in cooling system. I am 95% sure this is your problem it is a common problem on these

05 ford ranger started knocking and shut off now won't crank. What is wrong?

Started knocking and shut off ? Now will not start?
That sounds bad - check fluids - engine oil and coolant - those three symptoms can indicate overheating (either by lack of coolant or engine oil).
Did either fluid get low AND does the engine oil look contaminated - milky colored and way overful.
Not Start? Does it turn the engine and just not fire up running?
Or does the engine not turn over at all?
If the engine is siezed - you can tell by the electrical power needed to crank the engine - turn on the lights and try to crank the engine - if all you hear from the starter is a click and all the lights dim - that means a lot of power is needed like:
1. the battery doesn't have enough power - jump start to verify
2. or it requires more power to turn the engine than the battery can provide - engine siezed - try turning the engine by hand with socket/wrench to verify.
I hope your engine is not siezed - if so - hope you still have warranty coverage on the powertrain.
Please let me know what you find and if this helps?

I was coming back from the store which is 6 miles away. The engine transmission line read hot with the oil light on. I shut the car off and checked the transmission fluid and it was very low, so I put...

the smell was the catolic converter, the knock was probably a spark knock because the engine was so hot, i need to know what the make and model is before i can give you much more advice, i hope you did not put coolant into the transmission, the question you posted is not quite clear, so did you check the transmission fluid? and did you add transmission fluid? or did you check the engine coolant and add engine coolant? please get back with me with this info and i will try to help you out.

98 lincoln navigator loud noise, shaking, high rpm at idle, drive

I don't know how much oil you had to put in but it sounds like you have maybe more than opne issue and both sound major. One is engine reving and speed not picking up sounds like trans problem. Two the engine shaking and making noise and being run low on oil leans toward possible engine damage. If your mechanicly inclined check all fluids and when checking trans fluid smell it. If it smells burnt the trans has been damaged. Check oil pressure and make sure coolant is full. You may have to take it into the shop.

It could very well be a valve or lifter. The low oil may also cause the lifters or rods to knock.
As long as you aren't loosing oil or coolant, jeep runs good, and the knocking is not extreme, than add oil and you should be ok.

Sounds like your motor was starved of oil or had an internal malfunction. Possible rod and main bearing damage causing the motor to knock then lock-up. Check your oil level, if there is none or its low, this is the cause of the loud clicking/knocking. Have a mechanic check it out, you may need a new engine or major engine repair!!Hopefully this helps

Over filled with oil. lifters knocking

You will get low compression and oil will blow-by and cause a smoke storm cloud behind your truck.
You can get a fluid pump to pull out excess oil through the dipstick.
same happened to me, truck is tough and fine...no bailout needed :)
