Question about 1990 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Toyota steering too light

I have a 1990 Toyota 2wd pickup with about 160k miles. The power steering pump pressure hose started leaking so I replaced it. The steering now feels too light with a sloppy on center feel. I checked all the usual reasons i.e. bolts on the gear box, bolts on the steering shaft, wheel bearings, ball joints, tires, and alignment all seem to be ok. What would cause the light feel? I did not see any way to bleed the pump. Is there an adjustment on the steering gear box for this model? All I can see is an adjustment screw for an electrical switch on the box?

Thanks for your reply, the hose was replaced immediately after it started to leak. Once the fliud was pumped out it made a wine so I stopped and checked it over. I check all the fluids every 3k miles when I change the oil, so it had not been leaking very long. The steering had been rotated several times lock to lock but it did not change the feel.

The only way I know of to bleed a power steering system is to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock (all the way to one side and then turn all the way to the other side) 3 or 4 times. that will bleed all the air out of the system. You might have had a leak for a longer than that you realized and by fixing the hose the power steering works VERY good and you are no long used to how easy it once worked.

I would guess the steering fluid has gummed up your solenoid, making it difficult for your starter to engage the solenoid.

Power steering fluid is leaking badly. How do I locate the power steering pump and check the lines

Toyota power steering hoses fail very often, not certain what model you have, but follow the hose back from the power steering resiviour, and you will find the pump, then there is a high and low pressure line leading to the steering rack at the rear of the motor, it is usually the high pressure hose that fails

Is it the power steering pump or the line that's leaking?

Stop driving it before you ruin the pump or steering rack. Replace any leaking hoses, flush the system with correct fluid and fill.

Power steering hose, leaking. How to replace power steering hose.

You will have a leak from the pump, pressure hoses or the rack. You will have to get the system washed down and inspected for the leak, most common problem is the steering rack leaking, this will leak oil onto the exhaust and cause your smoking problem, start her.

Remove the power steering pump pulley.
Place a drain pan under the vehicle. Important: Cap or plug the ends of the power steering hoses to prevent fluid loss.
Disconnect the power brake booster inlet hose from the power brake booster.

Power steering leak

Check the pump front seal, Wipe down the hoses and check the crimp fittings for leakage Also look carefully at the steering gear, the fitings and pitman arm seal ( this one is on the bottom) and the seal where the steering column goes in.
