My 2003 impala's temp gauge is bouncing all over the place and using coolant like crazy.I do not see any visable leaks anywhere.I fill it up and is fine for about a day til it uses a certain amount of fluid then the temp gauge in the car starts bouncing around from Hot to halfway to hot and so on.any idea's thx!
Depending on mileage, many of these motors develop a leak around the intake manifold gasket...the antifreeze leak usually burns off of the hot intake before you can spot it. Most motors are worth this repair...about $350. to $450. at your nearby shop. It is a good sign that the motor temperature stays cool when it has adequate coolant. You did not mention seeing any milky color on your oil check dipstick...that is a sign the head gasket is leaking...a much more costly repair...Your least costly repair could be a defective radiator cap...free pressure tests at you local parts store. Hope this helps.
I did not notice a conformation on the Milage or how Long this Has been going on Assuming ( I Know lol ) its a 3.4 or 3.8, I stopped keeping Track Years ago of whos running what in what, Just Fix'em lol, The Oil Pressure Gauge Bouncing, You Have Been Giving VERY Good Advice, The Latest Issue on The GM 3.8 with same Issue, Head Gasket Blew and as Far as I can Tell Oil Pressure Dropped at #6 for very Few seconds to Minutes causing a Dry Roller On Lifter to Freeze, in that short time frame, ate lifter Roller less then Half, Dead Cylinder, Power Loss, Head Gaskets, all gone in Seconds, If you Have 160,000 or Above, want to Keep the Car, I Advise, Head Gaskets, Heads Pressure Tested, Cam and Bearings Checked, Timing Chain, Gears, Tensioner, Check Oil Pump Ware, Yes I Know Suggesting almost Complete Over Haul, Im More Suggesting Inspection, Your chances of seeing upper End ware is going to surprise you, Hate to see you do it twice when it could just be the cost of gaskets to Look, Only A suggestion,
SOURCE: seem to be losing oil in coolant of 2003 impala 3.4
it sounds like the start of a leakey head gasket a head gasket stop water , oil and compression from mixing together If the car has been hot in the past i would change the head gakets and flush radiator professaly before you end up with a cracked head
SOURCE: 04 CHEVY IMPALA IS LEAKING GREEN FLUID.
It seems that Midas is going to stand behind the work that they did on your car. If there is something happening that they haven't already diagnosed, they should be able to tell you that, too.
My guess is that the green liquid you saw was coolant coming from the overflow of the coolant recovery tank because the system is overheating and the excess pressure is forcing coolant out. There may still be air in the cooling system, or possibly air is getting into the system from a bad head gasket or crack in the head or block. Check to see if there is any evidence of oil in the coolant, or if there is water in the crankcase -- the oil on the dipstick will look 'milky'.
SOURCE: I have a severe anti- freeze leak on my '94
a common problem with the 2.2 motor is the head gasket leaking on the drivers side just above the transmission. It runs down over the trans.
SOURCE: 2003 Impala fuel gauge used to bounce and now
most of the time this is simply just the float in the gas tank getting stuck had the same problem in my car. unfortunately you have to access the gas tank to fix, but it is an easy fix. hope this helps any questions let me know.
