89 cadi chokes/floods itself out

I just picked up a 1989 cadillac Brougham and was told it had a new carb kit dont to it. It is currently a 4-barrel. I have issues with black smoke out of the tail pipe, and the car choking itself out until it shifts into 2nd. after that it is normally fine, but I have issues again if it has to down shift into first again.

Have an accredited service shop do a carby check as it could be a float level to high, incorrect mixture adjustment or power valve /pump incorrectly fitted
black smoke is excessive fuel and a rebuilt carby, if done by a DIY, is always suspect

is car a CARB. (yes)

on all cars, carb or EFI , starting is same (basics)

example. (classical)

does it crank robustly, yes,

Does engine have 150PSI WOT compression, times 4. (yes)

does it have, spark on all 4 cylinders and is it timed right. (strobe it for time to spec)

answer, yes, (examples) and is timed right.

now we land on fueling

in this case its a carb.

the first test is , is the fuel at the top mark for for float level.

yes, good, no , pump bad. or filter clogged.

ok next.

is the choke on,, but not 100% if 100 % it floods,

is it ok? the choke plate.?

yes.

ok i got every thing it takes to start and its not flooding.

so what is wrong, easy, the carb is TOAST , get a new one.

oops, nobody sells them. its too old a car. in most cases.

but in my cause, i rebuild them.

i restore old cars and motorcycles, (stock)

so can do it. some take 3 used junk carbs to get one working.

and a kit. i find the carb kit first.

then boil it out (Berrymens) then kit it and tune it like the FSM directs.

there did it all end to end.

most 28yo carbs are useless and long gone.

(cept after im done)

i put in butterfly shaft bushing, and kit them.

if they are corroded to dust the hit the trash.

If this is a gas operated vehicle with injectors it would be strange. But if it has a TBI system then something is causing a fault so it dumps fuel and floods the engine. If this has a Rochester 4 barrel your float is faulty or the needle and seat is sticking open and dumping fuel and causing this. There is also 1 other thing that can do this and if it has a carb, it could also be the butterfly or thottle plate at the top of the carb closing from vacuum. make sure the hoses if any are connected to the choke system, and or any wire that feeds electrical current to the choke. Unless someone rebuilt it and did not correctly reassemble it. or put the choke spring on the wrong side of the notch for the upper butterfly. Then this would close the butterfly as it warms up and then choke the engine..never know..could have been a monday or friday....good luck

Washer fluid will not pump on a 1989 Cadillac Brougham

The Brougham is the rear wheel drive version - so the washer pump is mounted on the wiper motor.
Depending on what is wrong with the pump, you could replace it or rebuild it.
A mechanic would make sure the wiper motor is getting power to the pump when you engage the switch.

Can you run 89 cadillac deville without air pump

I am not a Cady expert. In my experience, you can probably run an engine with out the air pump ... but why would you? The air pump reduces emmissions and improves performance. Removing the pump will also require reconfiguring the belt scheme.

Best solution is fix the pump.

I have an 89 cady with a 307. I replaced.the alternator, waterpump, waterpump pulley and .all of the belts but it is still screaming loudly. What else could it be caused from?

It probably is your P/S Belt. The P/S belt is adjusted different than the other belts. There is a slot in the pully that has to be lined up with the adjusting bolt on the pump. I think the adjusting bolt is more towsrd the bottom part of the pump. Tighten this up and that should repair the screaming.

1986 cadillac rebuilt rochester quadrajet 4 barrel carburetor .Started car right up .problem is starts with choke engaged and instead of kicking down once warmed up it reaves higher.its not flooding out...

It sounds like whoever rebuilt the carb hooked the choke linkage up the wrong way. The mechanism can go together wrong and still fit. One of the pieces is a counterweight to trip the linkage off and it is likely in there wrong. It is usually painted green. The linkage will have to come apart and be redone. I've rebuilt a few and never had any luck finding a good diagram of how it is supposed to go together. There is one piece that has small steps on it, and when the choke is activated it is supposed to lock out the back barrels. The steps are what makes your engine rev higher when you try to kick it down. You have to play with it, put it together, close the choke and then trip the throttle. If it doesn't open try again. Sorry but hope this helps.

Where do I get freon for my '89 DeVille?

Any good parts store can sell you conversion kit to convert it from the old stuff (Freon 12) to the new 134. You might still be able to find old stuff but it's outrageously expensive (and currently illegal)

I have an 84 caprice with carburetor problems, its a regular 4 barrel carb but floods out when starting

If your problem exists only for a cold engine,the cause could be ,Choke pulloff diaphram,choke
coil ,or that the choke coil is not being heated properly. On a hot engine ,problem could be
carb bleeding over as aresult of bad float, needle and seat,or secondary well seals.
Recommend carburator overhaul.
