Question about 1999 Mercury Mystique
Noticed battery light flickering on and off ,battery draining when running
The alternator light flickering, especially at higher rpm's, is a sign the brushes in the alternator are worn. Normally, the whole alternator is replaced. The alternator is located in a very unhandy place to work on, so its not a pleasant job for a do-it-yourselfer. I had the Mercury dealer replace mine with a rebuilt alternator a year ago, and the cost ran around $500. If the problem is just the alternator, there should be no need to replace the battery, unless it happens to be bad also.
