Question about 1998 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Over consumption of fuel

I have 1998 Nissan Altima GXE. I discovered that having covered 240 miles, the vehicle had consumed 20 galons of fuel (pertrol gas oil). This looks abnormal in term of fuel efficiency? I would be very glad if I could be rightly guided of how to solve this problem.

Regarding the 1998 Nissan Altima GXE (automatic). The listed mileage ratings were 28 mpg highway & 21 mpg city. However, I always believed that this was misleading. When you start the car, the overdrive is automatic engaged. If you get up to 35 mph on a city road, you'll probably wind up in 4th gear (overdrive), which keeps your RPMs low and you use less gas. However, this makes braking more difficult, so I always had clicked the overdrive off when starting the car. In fact, I only used the overdrive when on the freeway when I got up over 50 mph (I liked to keep the RPMs between 2k to 3k).

I believe Nissan (and I know that other car makers have used this trick--the 2001 Toyota Camry, for example) intentionally had the overdrive automatically engage when starting the vehicle so that they could claim a higher mileage rating than drivers could normally expect. Nevertheless, I found it to be a good, trouble-free car.

Tire psi correct .no dragging brakes, clean air filter.proper gap on spark plugs, clean oil, check engine light off should be good to save and calm driving habits should help/ oxygen sensors/ o2 .should be changed at 100,000 km regardless as they wear out, slow crosscounts to ecm via fuel management ,dont over look o2 sensors just because there is no dtc in computer history

Where are the fuse and relays for a 2001 Nissan

Relays are located in many places on vehicles. You would have to know what relay in particular you were looking for to find it's exact location. Fuses are easy to find, they are in the compartment right in front of your left knee on the lower section of the front of the dash, the drivers side of the dash between the door and the dash or sometimes under the hood. There is a door that pulls off to reveal the fuses, the door will have a diagram of the fuse locations. Here is a link from the internet with more information. What is the fuel consumption for a toyota spacio model 1998?

There are a few websites that have the official fuel consumption information for a new vehicle. Just google "1998 toyota spacio specs" and you can look it up.

The consumption you will achieve on one of these cars (now 12 years old with lots of miles driven) depends upon:
1. how they are driven; and
2. how they are mechanically maintained; and
3. running sufficiently high tyre pressures to minimise rolling resistance; and
4. the octane rating of fuel used and whether or not it is an ethanol blended fuel.(You will need to consume more fuel for the same distance traveled if using an ethanol blended versus a straight non-ethanol fuel).

A poorly maintained vehicle will usually give poor fuel economy as will one that is driven hard.

Could be the bearings in your alternator have gone dry and your alternator is about to quit out on you. I had a friend with an 01 altima and we could always hear him coming before we saw him because of this very problem. Changed the alternator out and noise went away. Thanks for using FixYa!

Tune-up

That all depends on the mileage, first tune is 100,000 miles, the very least you will need is spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter, use factory spark plugs, many brands available but the factory plugs work best.
