1996 Geo Metro Clutch won't disengage

Clutch won't disengage on Geo Metro 5-spd manual.
Can start car in neutral but then cannot get car into any gear - grinds gears when tried.
Can also start car if in gear but starter makes car move when engaged even if clutch is depressed. In other words, if the car is in reverse and I crank the starter to start it, the car will start to back-up even if the clutch is depressed. Had to use the starter to back the car out of my parking spot at work, then turn off, shift into 2nd and used the starter to start it again & drove home in 2nd gear.
Cannot shift once car is started - grinds gears when tried.
Thought the starter pinion might be stuck but just replaced that and did not fix problem.
Any suggestions?

Hi,

In all likelihood two (2) possibilities:

  • defective clutch cable (most likely); and/or
  • defective clutch fork (least likely).
Should it be the cable, this might be of help. It is turns out to be the fork, you might need the services of a qualified professional or a dealership.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

My 1990 Honda Accord won't start. I just replaced

i have two things that come to mind first of which is your neutral safety switch ...its located on the clutch pedal ..its to prevent the car from being started in gear it may not be working correctly and wont let power to the started when you turn the key...most likely the problem...the other thing if thats not it you may need to check the ignition switch...

1- Verify the procedure of bleeding.
2- Probably you have to run the car even than the faces of the rotor and the pads mold.
