ALTERNATOR WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE USED IN MY ZG GRAND CHEROKEE 4LTR 1997 THE VOLT METER DROPS BELOW 12 VOLTS AND THE COMPUTER SAY REAR BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE YET THEY ARE WORKING FINE. IS THE ALTERNATOR ON THE WAY OUT . THANK YOU VINNY

Check all your grounding straps especially the one from your block to the frame if it is worn rusty or in bad shape replace it check your connections id bet it is just your ground strap

How to tell if alternator is gone on 2000 protege


Hi John, The easiest way to check the alternator is to connect a voltage test meter between the positive and negative battery terminals. A fully charged battery should give 12 and a half to twelve and three quarter volts. Have some one start the engine (making sure the vehicle is in neutral or park and with the park brake fully applied). Voltage during start should not drop to lower than eleven volts. With engine running the voltage reading should be around thirteen volts. Turn on the head lights (full beam) and the heated rear window. The voltage should be maintained or increase slightly above the previous reading. If during start up the battery voltage dropped below that stated earlier the battery will probably need replacement. If the voltages remain constant or drop during the engine run, and if voltage drops below pre start conditions, the alternator requires attention. Regards John

97 outback impreza brake light wont come on


You need to check the function of the brake light switch, to do this you need a 12 volt test light or a DC volt meter. Go under the dash, remove any panel under the dash above the brake pedal, look up and you will see the switch, probe the connector or of the switch, it should have 12 volts on one side and 12 volts on both sides when the brake pedal is depressed, replace as needed. See picture below of typical switch location. The switch is #4

When the Jeep was new the volt meter read 14 volts....now the volt meter reads 13 volts with a one year old battery. Since the battery is a 12 volt battery should there be any concern that the volt meter...


It needs to be looked at,hook a volt meter to the battery,and start the engine,turn the ac on high blower,and the head lights on,the alternator should be putting out 13.65 volts to 14.25 volts,if it is any lower than this,replace the alternator,now,if the reading is not the same as in the vehicles volt meter,then the cables,positive and negative need to be replaced,the cables get old,and corrode on the inside and break down,they do not carry the current as they should.Shuold you decide to replace them,go with a larger diameter cable,both positive,and negative.

The battery light went on and the brake light went on


Sounds like an alternator problem[not charging]To test just get a dc volt meter and check the battery voltage at idle with the engine running[should be between 13.2 and 14.5 volts.if its under 12 volts then the alternator is not charging the battery and it will have to be removed for repair.

Light signial going off and on no interior lights and wont start can hear a clicking sound


Problem is first that either your battery is not well connected (clean terminals,) or, battery is low on charge either failing from age or not being charged by charging system.(charge battery and test with volt meter) After correcting that, put a volt meter across the battery with the vehicle running.
Voltage should read near 13.5 volts or slightly better but not over 14.
Voltage running with all accessories on including high beams should not drop below 12.5. Jumping from another vehicle may get it started but no matter how long you run it, it can never re-charge the battery (not designed for that) and can actually destroy your alternator. Use a battery charger.

My son's 96 grand cherokee kill's the battery when engine is shutoff and also when running the volt meter will be o.k. for a bit and then nose dive to 0 volts. had alt. checked o.k.. seemed to start acting...


start the vehicle up and unhook the pos cable from the battery if it dies its going to be a bad alternator or the battery has gone bad.one sure way to know if its the alternator is to un hook the pos cable while the car is running.they can test good even when they arent.
