Permantly running as if the choke is out

    engine running fast, over reving, could it be the air intake? or is it the engine management system?

It's probably a vacuum leak, but your air intake should be intact and if not and your mass air flow is not hooked up correctly it will cause this problem. Check first for vacuum leaks.

Check to see if choke valve is stuck close, if it has one. Check throttle linkage for sticking. This car may have an idle control valve. It may be dirty of defective. If so, remove it, clean it, replace it. Diconnect the battery for 10 minutes, reconnect and start it up.

What do you mean choke is sticking? Could be dirty throttle body, or bad throttle body. What year escort is it, eng size, etc?
What is the car doing that makes it seem like a choke is sticking?

If you have a carby ,check for faulty needle and seat or auto choke fully on If cpu check for fault codes

try changing the auto choke temperature sensor ,its on the head but i cannot remember exactly where ,get confused with the escorts

check to see if choke shaft is clean and not bound-if electric choke check for power to the heater element

98 Escort Hard starting when hot

sounds like a dodgy mis reading of a sensor caused by electrical resistance which is turning choke on and flooding engine.know the fault but without car in front of me its difficult to diagnose,could be auto choke sensor which is on right hand side of cylinder head ,but not is probally dealer have you tried spark plug gaps ??25th although this would cause problems with cold starting not hot starting but its worth a look
