I would get the transmission fluid and filter changed by an ASE certified mechanic. That transmission is designed to put itself into second gear as a limp home mode. If you only have the problem when it is cold, you might still have a chance to save your transmission from total failure by changing.

From what I know, There isn't a additive made that will help a transmission after they are so far gone. I did have good luck with Lucas Transmission treatment with a transmission that was acting up when I was miles away from home and I just used it for a one shot deal. Would I want to depend on that fix to help out every day I had to drive the car...sad to say, no, I wouldn't. Good luck

Ford designed their transmissions (the early ones) to be in 2nd gear if you put them in second gear. In other it starts out in 2nd, not first, if the shifter is in 2nd. ( they called it "snow gear" ) You are right it could be the governor, it could also be the kick down linkage is not adjusted right. If it only does this when it's cold, I would be leaning toward the gov. You might get it to free up with just some clean fluid but it may require being removed and replaced.

BTW, your caps lock button is stuck too =)

Sounds like torque converter, or pump in the transmission is going bad.

My 2006 Durango (24,000 Miles),when cold, takes a long time for the auto trans to shift from 1st to 2nd gear(5-10 seconds) Once its warmed up its fine. Its summer and not cold yet- will this be worse in...

Many modern vehicles will delay the shift position to allow rpms to increase, thus warming the engine up faster. As soon as the engine temp reaches the desired level, the transmission shift point resorts to the normal point.

This is an emissions issue, with the idea that a warm engine puts out lower emissions. This is also why when getting an emissions inspection in states that require it, they want the engine warmed up first.

At 24K miles, I would be hesitant to say the transmission fluid and filter need to be changed, but if it seems extremely noticable and objectionable, that would be the step I would take. Cold fluid is more viscuos, harder to push thru a clogged filter than a clean one. However, unless you've been towing a trailer a good bit, your mileage should be low enough that filter should not be an issue.

Trans. problem

3speed or 4 speed? does it slip or just not shift. Might be old seals or a bad governor. Try using lubegard trans additive. Try that for a week if it doesn't work, replace the governor valve.

Toyota pickup 1988 V6 Auto tranny does not shift into low 1

I guess the best , easiest & cheapest thing to do, right of the start is get fluid & filter changed, and lube all cables & linkages thoroughly, unless that's all been done recently.
