Question about 1994 Ford Thunderbird

1 Answer

Car stalls My 1994 Ford Thunderbird starts and runs about a half mile and it stalls. It smells like gas when it does it. As long as it is cold it runs. I desperately need this car and I don't have a lot of money. Can you help me?

TRY THIS PROCEDURE I DEVELOPED.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Do you smell gasoline fuel ?? When there's too much fuel, it saturates the spark plugs, preventing ignition. Let it sit for an hour to let spark plugs dry, then it starts OK later. Next time, turn starter without giving any throttle or very small throttle as engine turns. Myself, when my 2006 Dodge Plymouth minivan (sitting in storage) needs to start, I squirt (half second) starting fluid into air filter, close the air filter housing to trap flammable gas from starting fluid, then turn the engine without pressing on throttle. When the engine starts is when I give it a little throttle to bring up the RPM to 2,000 until it idles on its own without stalling from cold engine.

it could be a head gasket starting to go, letting coolant seep in and not allowing the fuel to completley detonate, I blew a head gasket and it would still run, but it poured out smoke, and smelled like burnt antifreeze and gas

Car just started running rough with white gas smelling smoke comming from exhaust

Sounds like head gasket needs replaced or worse one of the heads is cracked leaking antifreeze into cylinder burning out the exhaust, would advise not to continue running as you can lock up the engine if antifreeze is leaking into the engine oil. It will seize the bearings blowing your engine.

This is an idea not a for sure. Bad or worn valves can cause what you describe. Had something similar happen to an 2004 Toyota. Due to bad lubrication, crazy huh?

I have a 1987 Ford Thunderbird that stalls while stopping after the car has warmed up to operating temperature. Once the car has stalled 3 times you have to wait almost a day before it will restart.

If someone has adjusted the idle speed or taken off vacuum lines check that first. If it was sudden I would say bad gas but it should do it when cold too. Its possible your fuel pump is failing when it starts to warm up. You might try a new fuel filter, if it is clogged it may overwork the fuelpump.

1994 t-bird lx 3.8 car start for a sec. but stalls

Could be bad gas ( underground water seepage is more common in the winter ). You need to verify that your getting fuel to the rails and that the fuel is OK. Next, check your fuel regulator at the fuel rail. Sometimes when they go bad they will let too much fuel go past and the injectors will flood out. This happened to a Bronco I had. Check the fuel pressure at the rail. Sounds like fuel related, not spark.

Transmission Modulator. Sounds like the vacuum line from the intake to the trans is suckin trans fluid. Not sure about that car but maybe worth a shot.
