You must have a nearly dead battery, have it jumped then go to a Kragen and have them test the battery and the charging system for a fault. This is FREE!

Will bad spark plugs cause your car to tick.

No, this will not cause a tick. A tick on this car is most likely a worn valve train and this is a common problem on this car especially with high milage and poor oil maintainance. They are not adjustable so you must buy parts and have the valves ground to make a fix. When the valves are gorund the head shop must finish the job with the valve stem protuding the correct distance from the top ot the head. If too short, the valves will tick. If too long, the valves can not close properly. The hydraulic lifters only have a limited amount of self adjustment. The other wearing parts need to be checked too.
Hope this helps, Let us know, Robert

1996 grand prix 3.1 L when i first start engine the lifter ticks or the vale sticks till i get it on the road and punch it then it quits ticking what should i do

Are you sure it's a tick or is it more of a knock? There is a service bulletin on this issue from GM. Long story short, they tell you to replace all the pistons in the engine to fix it. BUT. This won't hurt anything and you don't have to fix it. I have this exact car. It's been doing this since it's had 75,000 on it. It now has 210,000 on it an is still doing it. It knocks when its cold till it warms up and the pistons expand. Then it goes away. Car still runs perfect.

Why does a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix make a ticking noise at 40 MPH ?

Please try to give more information about the ticking.
Can you pin point the source or location of the Tick?
Is it coming from inside of the Car or out? From the dash, Wheel, Etc
And is the tick a steady tick, Maybe a metalic noise?
Try to expand the on the subject the best that you can.
Then I'll get back to you on this matter.

Alternator ticking

To me it sounds like the bearing for the pulley is gone. But are you one hundred percent sure that it's coming from the alternator?

It only ticks when i first start it. after it heats up the ticking gose away and the car runs great! i have added the stuff to my oil that is supost to stop the tick... dint work. any ideas??

Try 5w 30 synthetic oil and some marvel oil. Ticking is likely a lifter...as long as it dosen't get worse, it should be OK the way it is and using oil I said may after time get it to quiet down.(took time to get that way and takes time to get it better) If it does get worse, it will need replacement.

Car is ticking and will not start

Hi deeweave,
My name is Dennis and I can be of assistance.
The ticking (clicking) sound is the starter solenoid clicking to complete (close) the starter electrical circuit and to insert the starter pinion in the flywheel ring gear but the starter motor does not have enough amperage available to turn the starter motor.
All this to say you have corroded battery terminals. I know this sounds stupid but think about it, The battery circuit as enough current to power the radio but not the higher current demands like head lights when you use the seat motor at the same time. Clean the battery terminals of resistance causing corrosion and the car will start and your other ignition problems will go away also. AFTER they are clean REATTACH them and cover them with a light coating of grease to keep the oxygen off and they will corrode less.
Glad to be of assistance. Please rate the solution because I can learn from your rating.
Thank you
Dennis
