I have the same issue, i replaced my thermostat only days ago along with my water pump, i get heat blowing, but the heat is only warm. Not hot enough to defrost anything. Im curious about this blend door your refering to, do all dakotas have that and if so, can you give me more of an idea where it is?

I have same problem . I changed thermostatand water pump and still blows out warm heat not very hot

I have had the same problem, it blows out only cool-warm air but it won't heat up. I replaced the thermostat hoping that would do it but it didn't. So i'm left in the cold.

You may have a vacum leak under the hood or dash. you may find this usually isnt that hard to fix. also look under the dash and try to find the blend door. move it to heat with your hand and see if you have heat then. good luck .

2000 dodge stratus. Heater only works at idle, when driving at high speeds, heater blows cold and thermostat gauge goes to cold. Back flushed heater core, new thermostat any ideas?

I'd say you have a faulty thermostat, be it new or not. If your temperature gauge goes to cold as your engine is taking you down the highway, the thermostat is not doing its job. The temperature should never come down to below normal until engine is shut off...

I have a dodge 97 dakota, my heater doesnt blow out heat after warming up and being driven, and sometimes i kind of smell antifreeze, when i use the defroster

it sounds as if you have two problems, one the heater core is plugged and two you have a heater core that is leaking.the leak is shown when you use the defroster by the smell and chances are there is a light film of antifreeze on the windsheild.and the plugged heater core is shown by no heat.check the radiator to make sure the coolant level is full and the overflow bottle is at the full level. as a low coolant level in the radiator will cause no heat.with the car warmed up(radiator coolant hot), check the heater hoses at the firewall were they enter the heater core they should be the same temperature from one hose to the other.if the coolant level is up and the hoses are the same temperature then the heater core is plugged.if the coolant temperature is the same from hose to hose but not hot to the touch the thermostat may be weak and needs replacing.either way the heater core will need to be replaced as it is leaking into the heater box assembly

Should clutch fan turn freely with engine off ? if its locked in and the temp gauge shows it running in the middle would it still effect the heater temp

It should turn 'freely', that is it should spin about 1 1/2 revolutions when spun then come to a stop. They are designed to 'slip' at lower temperatures, and 'lock' when the engine is running at higher temperatures. Your heater temperature is affected by the engine coolant thermostat and the blend door in the heater core itself.

My truck starts running hot then I turn the heater on and it blows cold air but every once in a while the heater will throw out hot air. Then the temp gauge will go down. I've check med the radiator cap...

I'd still check the thermostat. Or basically just replace it. Have you ever drained all the antifreeze and flushed the system? Good time to do both. If the hose's get real hot that doesn't really mean the thermostat open. Wouldn't they get hot even if the thermostat didnt open.? If the thermostat was stuck open you'd would have cold air and low temp gauge. Then maybe hit a pump or something and have the thermostat stick closed and have high temp. Maybe water pump. Check it when you have the belt off. Spin, pull & push the water pump pulley around. I'd replaced my water pump at about 110,000 on a '97 dodge Dakota. My 97 never had a very good heater. Always heated up more after driving. Idle never got it warmed up.

I have 97 dodge caravan 3.0 and i put in a brand new radiator and thermostat. Now the cooling fans dont come on and fluid is bubbling up and coming out of the reservoir. But if I unplug the temp. sensor...

Not unusual to get big airlock if heater (not defrost) isn't on during bleeding process. I usually start vehicle, top up rad 1 " or so from top, turn heater on , then watch temperature gauge & wait for fan to come on after I see flow through rad indicating thermostat opened.(Normal operating temperature)I let it do that about 3 times before I put rad cap back on, after topping rad up to about an inch or 2 from top. Then fill coolant return bottle, to proper level. It may be your problem, but if your temperature gauge goes way up past normal operating temperature, before you see flow in rad, then maybe a faulty thermostat is the cause.

1999 Dodge Durango NO HEAT

Bad NEW thermostat? I had the same problem on my first generation Dakota. The problem for me turned out to be the DODGE thermostat I used to replace the old Dodge part. I went and got a Stant from local auto parts store using the standard temperature spec and quit shivering the next time I drove it. I hope that helps!
