Question about 1994 Dodge Caravan

Timing Tensioner Hi Again, Well I found out it's not a rod bearing going out, the timing tensioner bolt broke. Now my problem is, how do i get the rest of the bolt out? I bought a new tensioner and bolt to replace it, also a new water pump and timing belt. My husband drilled the old bolt and used an easy out, but the old bolt isn't budging, he sprayed it with ez blaster to try and loosen it but that didn't work either, sooo anyone got any other suggestions? Thanks a bunch for any help.

It has been necessary to heat(hot) the old stud in order to free it, try a bolt extractor rather than an easy out worse case scenario would be to drill out the bolt to almost the diameter of the hole, if you damage the threads you may have to chase new threads or the old reliable heli coil will work. hope this helps good luck.

Hi Steven, All gears and bearings are to be tightened before finally setting the tensioner bearing. Begin alignment from the crankshaft and continue on the non tensioned side of the belt across the cam gears and finally tension the tensioner bearing. Regards John

How to change a timing belt on a hyundai Elantra 1.5 , 1.6 and 2.0 engine


1.5L And 1.6L Engines
  1. Remove all necessary components for access to the timing belt cover, then remove the cover.
  2. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks so No.1 piston will be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
  3. Loosen the tensioning bolt and the pivot bolt on the timing belttensioner. Move the tensioner as far as it will go toward the waterpump. Tighten the adjusting bolt.
  4. Mark the timing belt with an arrow showing direction of rotation if belt is to be reused.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6. If defective, remove the timing belt tensioner.

  1. Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and check that the crankshaft timing marks are still in alignment.
  2. If removed, install the timing belt tensioner, spring and spacer with the bottom end of the spring free. Tighten the adjusting bolts lightly with the tensioner moved as far as possible away from the water pump.
  3. Install the free end of the spring into the locating tang on the front case.
  4. Position the timing belt over the crankshaft sprocket, then over the camshaft sprocket. Slip the back of the belt over the tensioner wheel.
  5. Turn the camshaft sprocket in the opposite of its normal direction of rotation until the straight side of the belt is tight and be sure the timing marks align.
    NOTE If the timing marks are not properly aligned, shift the belt 1tooth at a time in the appropriate direction until they are aligned.
  6. Loosen the tensioner mounting bolts so the tensioner works,without the interference of any friction, under spring pressure. Be sure the belt follows the curve of the camshaft pulley so the teeth are engaged all the way around. Correct the path of the belt, if necessary.
  7. Tighten the tensioner adjusting bolt, then the tensioner pivot bolt to 15-18 ft. lbs. (20-26 Nm).
    NOTE Bolts must be tightened in the stated order or tension won't be correct.
  8. Turn the crankshaft 1 turn clockwise until timing marks again align to seat the belt.
  9. Loosen both tensioner attaching bolts and let the tensioner position itself under spring tension. Retighten the bolts.
  10. Check belt tension by putting a finger on the water pump side ofthe tensioner wheel and pull the belt toward the water pump. The belt should move toward the pump until the teeth are approximately 1 / 2 of the way across the head of the tensioner adjusting bolt. Re-tension the belt, if necessary.
  11. Install the timing belt covers and all other related components.

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Engine cover Accessory drive belts Idler pulley Crankshaft pulley Power steering pump pulley Belt tensioner pulley Upper and lower timing belt covers
  4. Support the engine with a floor jack and remove the engine mount.
  5. Rotate the engine to align the camshaft sprocket timing marks with the cylinder head cover timing marks.

To install:
  1. Ensure that the engine is set to Top Dead Center (TDC).
  2. Prepare the auto tensioner for installation by compressing it in a vise and installing a retaining pin.
  3. Install the timing belt in the following order:
    1. Crankshaft sprocket
    2. Idler pulley
    3. Left bank exhaust camshaft sprocket
    4. Left bank intake camshaft sprocket
    5. Water pump pulley
    6. Right bank intake camshaft sprocket
    7. Right bank exhaust camshaft sprocket
    8. Tensioner pulley

  4. Install the auto tensioner. Do not remove the retaining pin at this time.
  5. Check that the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are aligned correctly.
  6. Rotate the crankshaft 1 / 4 turn Counterclockwise .
  7. Rotate the crankshaft 1 / 4 turn Clockwise to return the engine to TDC.
  8. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt.
  9. Apply 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) torque to the tensioner pulley as shown and tighten the center bolt to 32-41 ft. lbs. (43-55 Nm).

  10. Remove the auto tensioner retaining pin.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions Clockwise , then wait 5 minutes for the auto tensioner to adjust.
  12. Measure the auto tensioner rod as shown. If the measurement is not 3.8-4.5 mm, then repeat the belt tensioning procedure.

To install:

  9. Apply 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) torque to the tensioner pulley as shown and tighten the center bolt to 32-41 ft. lbs. (43-55 Nm).

  10. Remove the auto tensioner retaining pin.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions Clockwise , then wait 5 minutes for the auto tensioner to adjust.
  12. Measure the auto tensioner rod as shown. If the measurement is not 3.8-4.5 mm, then repeat the belt tensioning procedure.

Timing belt


TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS R & I
NOTE: Some procedures may differ slightly due to engine
construction.
Removal
1) Remove all necessary air ducts. Position No. 4 piston at
TDC of compression stroke. Align timing marks. See Fig. 2. Remove fan
and fan shroud. Remove belts. If necessary, remove radiator and
splashguard.
2) Prevent engine from rotating and remove crankshaft timing
pulley retaining bolt. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
Remove spring from tension pulley. Loosen adjusting bolt and move
pulley toward water pump. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION: Ensure pistons are at TDC when rotating camshaft or damage
may result.
Inspection
1) Handle timing belt carefully. Avoid twisting or kinking
belt. Do not allow belt to become contaminated by water, oil, dirt or
other contaminates. Inspect belt for cracks or damage. If necessary,
replace.
2) Measure tension pulley spring length and force. Spring
length should not exceed 2.76" (70.2 mm) and spring force should not
be less than 197-347 lbs. (27-48 kg).
3) Replace tension pulley spring if not within specification.
Installation
1) Pull tensioner fully toward water pump side and
temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Ensure No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on
compression stroke by rotating crankshaft until keyway aligns with
mark on front crankshaft seal housing (12 o'clock). Rotate camshaft
until timing mark on cam gear (arrow) aligns with mark on upper
camshaft cover (notch). See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When timing marks are aligned as stated above, No. 4 piston
is at TDC on compression stroke.
2) Position timing belt over crankshaft sprocket, oil pump
sprocket, camshaft sprocket and tensioner in that order. Ensure belt
is positioned in sequence given and without slack between sprockets.
Loosen tension sprocket adjusting bolt allowing spring tension to
tighten belt. Tighten adjusting bolt temporarily.
3) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate
crankshaft 2 complete revolutions in opposite direction of engine
rotation, until marks on crankshaft and front oil seal retainer are
aligned again. See Fig. 2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt, allowing
tesioner spring to fully adjust tension. Tighten tensioner lock bolt.
4) Install timing belt covers. To complete installation,
reverse removal procedures. Tighten all bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of this article.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing belt matchmarks and set cylinder No. 1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Once in this position, the engine must NOT be turned or disturbed.
  3. Remove all necessary components to gain access to the cylinder head and timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the cylinder head and timing belt covers.
  5. There are 2 belts in this system; the one running to the camshaft pulley is the timing belt. The other, shorter one drives the balance shafts and is referred to as the balancer belt or timing balancer belt. Lock the timing belt adjuster in position by installing one of the lower timing belt cover bolts to the adjuster arm.
  6. Loosen the timing belt and balancer shafts tensioner adjuster nut, but do not loosen the nut more than 1 turn. Push the tensioner for the balancer belt away from the belt to relieve the tension. Hold the tensioner and tighten the adjusting nut to hold the tensioner in place.
  7. Carefully remove the balancer belt. Do not crimp or bend the belt; protect it from contact with oil or coolant. Slide the belt off the pulleys.
  8. Remove the balancer belt drive sprocket from the crankshaft.
  9. Loosen the lockbolt installed to the timing belt adjuster and loosen the adjusting nut. Push the timing belt adjuster to remove the tension on the timing belt, then tighten the adjuster nut.
  10. Remove the timing belt. Do not crimp or bend the belt; protect it from contact with oil or coolant. Slide the belt off the pulleys.
  11. If defective, remove the belt tensioners by performing the following:
    1. Remove the springs from the balancer belt and the timing belt tensioners.
    2. Remove the adjusting nut.
    3. Remove the bolt from the balancer belt adjuster lever, then remove the lever and the tensioner pulley.
    4. Remove the lockbolt from the timing belt tensioner lever, then remove the tensioner pulley and lever from the engine.
  12. This is an excellent time to check or replace the water pump. Even if the timing belt is only being replaced as part of a good maintenance schedule, consider replacing the pump at the same time. To install:
  13. If the water pump is to be replaced, install a new O-ring and make certain it is properly seated. Install the water pump and retaining bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14. If the tensioners were removed, perform the following to install them:
    1. Install the timing belt tensioner lever and tensioner pulley. NOTE: The tensioner lever must be properly positioned on its pivot pin located on the oil pump. Be sure that the timing belt lever and tensioner moves freely and does not bind.
    2. Install the lockbolt to the timing belt tensioner, do not tighten the lockbolt at this time.
    3. Install the balancer belt pulley and adjuster lever.
    4. Install the adjusting nut and the bolt to the balancer belt adjuster lever. Do not tighten the adjuster nut or bolt at this time. NOTE: Be sure that the balancer lever and tensioner moves freely and does not bind.
    5. Install the springs to the tensioners.
    6. Move the timing belt tensioner its full deflection and tighten the lockbolt.
    7. Move the balancer its full deflection and tighten the adjusting nut.
  15. The crankshaft timing pointer must be perfectly aligned with the white mark on the flywheel or flex-plate; the camshaft pulley must be aligned so that the word UP is at the top of the pulley and the marks on the edge of the pulley are aligned with the surfaces of the head.
  16. Install the timing belt over the pulleys and tensioners.
  17. Loosen the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner. Loosen, then tighten the timing belt adjusting nut.
  18. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the cam pulley has moved 3 teeth; this creates tension on the timing belt. Loosen, then tighten the adjusting nut and tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Tighten the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner.
  19. Realign the timing belt marks, then install the balancer belt drive sprocket on the crankshaft.
  20. Align the front balancer pulley; the face of the front timing balancer pulley has a mark, which must be aligned with the notch on the oil pump body. This pulley is the one at 10 o'clock to the crank pulley when viewed from the pulley end.
  21. Align the rear timing balancer pulley (2 o'clock from the crank pulley) using a 6 x 100mm bolt or rod. Mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.9 in. (74mm) from the end. Remove the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block; insert the bolt or rod into the hole. Align the 2.9 in. (74mm) mark with the face of the hole. This pin will hold the shaft in place during installation.
  22. Install the balancer belt. Once the belts are in place, be sure that all the engine alignment marks are still correct. If not, remove the belts, realign the engine and reinstall the belts. Once the belts are properly installed, slowly loosen the adjusting nut, allowing the tensioner to move against the belt. Remove the pin from the maintenance hole and reinstall the bolt and washer.
  23. Turn the crankshaft 1 full turn, then tighten the adjuster nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Remove the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner.
  24. Install the lower cover, ensuring the rubber seals are in place. Install a new seal around the adjusting nut, DO NOT loosen the adjusting nut.
  25. Install the key on the crankshaft and install the crankshaft pulley. Apply oil to the bolt threads and tighten it to 181 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  26. Install the upper timing belt cover and all applicable components. When installing the side engine mount, tighten the bolt and nut attaching the mount to the engine to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and the through-bolt and nut to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the engine under cover.
  2. Remove the crankshaft damper pulley.
  3. Disconnect the control wiring harness connector, battery wiring harness connector and connector bracket to engine mounting insulator.
  4. Remove the harness bracket. Remove the upper timing belt cover. Remove the water pump pulley. Remove the idler pulley.
  5. Remove the auto tensioner. Remove the lower timing belt cover.
  6. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align each timing mark to set the number one piston to TDC of its compression stroke.
  7. Remove the timing belt under cover rubber plug and then install special tool MD998738. Screw the special tool until it contacts the timing belt tensioner arm.

    NOTE The special tool must be screwed in gradually at the rate of a 30 degree turn per second. If it is screwed in all at once, the timing belt tensioner adjuster rod will not easily retract and the tool may bend.

  8. Gradually screw in the special tool and then align the timing belt tensioner adjuster rod set hole “A” with the timing belt tensioner adjuster cylinder set hole “B”.
  9. Insert a wire or pin in the set holes to lock the assembly in place. After removing the special tool, loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley mounting bolts and remove the timing belt. If the belt is being reused be sure to mark the direction of rotation (clockwise) on the belt.
  10. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley, tensioner arm and adjuster.
  11. Remove the timing belt idler pulley. Remove the timing belt lower cover bracket. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Remove the crankshaft pulley center bolt and washer. Remove the drive sprocket. Remove the crankshaft angle sensing blade.
  13. Remove the balancer timing belt tensioner. Remove the timing belt “B” (balancer belt) from its mounting.

The belt broke so I need to know where the timing marks should be in order to replace a broken cam gear and belt on 98 hyundai accent sohc


First you need to find out if this is a "safe" engine, a few are but most bend some valve when the belt goes (you could try turning gently by hand using the alternator belt) proceed as follows:-remove the drive belts, water pump pulleys, crank pulley, and the upper and lower timing covers.  You'll also need to remove the motor mount if 
You'll need to move the tensioner for installation of the new belt.  Loosen both the pivot and clamp bolts on the tensioner.  Pry the tensioner up and toward the back of the car, and when at the rearmost position, tighten the clamping bolt.

You'll also need to line up the camshaft and crankshaft to TDC.  There's a small hole in the camshaft sprocket that lines up with a notch in the front camshaft bearing cap.  The hole should be pretty much straight up when aligned.  There's a notch in the crankshaft sprocket that lines up with a *** on the front case of the engine.  If I recall correctly, this puts the Woodruff key at about 3:00 when aligned.  

Then install the timing belt with all the slack on the tensioner side.  Loosen the tensioner clamping bolt to release the tensioner, let it self-tension with the spring force, and retighten the clamping bolt.  Turn the engine clockwise with the crankshaft two crankshaft revolutions (1 cam revolution).  This will make sure you have the proper amount of slack on the tensioner side.  Recheck to make sure your marks are still aligned.  Then loosen the tensioner clamping bolt once again to let it self-adjust, and tighten the clamping and pivot bolts.  

After that, it's just a matter of putting everything back that you took off, but before doing anything, you may wish to consider that it's likely engine damage was done when the timing belt broke.  You may wish to pull the plugs and examine before you start anything mentioned above.  Evidence of anything hitting the plug is a sign of a valve broken off and probably a need for an entire engine.  You may also, after installing the timing belt, wish to bolt the crank pulley back on and see if the engine starts.  If the engine cranks quickly (lack of compression) and won't start, you've at least bent some valves and will need to remove the cylinder head.

  1. Set timing belt tensioner.
(a) Using a press, slowly press in the push rod using 100 - 1000 kg (220 - 2,205 lb, 981 - 9,807 N) of pressure. (b) Align the holes of the push rod and housing, pass a 1.27 mm hexagon wrench through the holes to keep the setting position of the push rod. (c) Release the press.
  1. Install timing belt tensioner.


(a) Turn the No.1 idler pulley bolt counterclockwise to obtain the specified torque toward the left as far as the No.1 idler pulley will go, and temporarily install the tensioner with the two bolts Torque: 18 N.m (180 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)


NOTICE: To apply the correct torque, apply the torque wrench along the axis through the bolts of the No.1 idler pulley and exhaust camshaft timing pulley.


(b) Slowly turn the crankshaft pulley 5/6 revolution, and align its groove with the ATDC 60° mark of the No.1 timing belt cover.
NOTICE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.





(c) Insert a 1.90 mm (0.075 in.) feeler gauge between the tensioner body and No.1 idler pulley stopper.
(d) Turn the No.1 idler pulley bolt counterclockwise to obtain the specified torque.
Torque: 18 N.m (180 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)
NOTICE: To apply the correct torque, apply the torque wrench along the axis through the bolts of the No.1 idler pulley and exhaust camshaft timing pulley.

(e) While pushing the tensioner, alternately tighten the two bolts. Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)



(f) Remove the 1.90 mm (0.075 in.) feeler gauge. (g) Remove the 1.27 mm hexagon wrench from the tensioner.


(h) Slowly turn the crankshaft pulley one revolution, and align its groove with theATDC 60° mark of the No.1 timing belt cover.
NOTICE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.




(i) Using a feeler gauge, check the specified clearance between the tensioner body and No.1 idler pulley stopper. If the clearance is not as specified, remove the tensioner and reinstall it.
Clearance: 1.80-2.20 mm (0.071 - 0.087 in.)
  1. Check valve timing.



(a) Slowly turn the crankshaft pulley two revolutions from TDC to TDC. NOTICE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.




(b) Check that each pulley aligns with the timing marks as shown in the illustration. If the marks do not align, remove the timing belt and reinstall it.
