I will be glad to assist you with a solution. By now, you have read some pretty outlandish posts, and may quite possibly disenchanted with us FixYa. But, I am asking you to trust that I can really help. The previous posts by Benimur, EmissionWiz, Irish Druid may very well be correct, as they are true experts. That being said, I simply cannot, without more info from you, give you a honest & helpful solution based upon the info that you have provided. So, to this end, I have to request that if you want me to assist you, you >>> cannot<<< click on any of the icons (Helpful, Thanks for Trying, etc.
That action will terminate my contact with you in this particular forum.
Now. Let us discuss your issue. First, is the Check Engine light on when it starts? Second, are there any cracks, holes, loose connections on the tubing between the air filter box and the throttle body? Third, and this may be the most important: is there any evidence of tampering with the silver box with the black cover (the Air Flow Meter)? If you can get this info back to me, and NOT terminate my response by clicking on the abovementioned icons, I am confident that I can get you up & running.
I am employed at a Toyota dealership. Please get back to me.

Could be bad airflow sensor or (MAS) engine will start normally , but then when it tries to read sensor it could rich/lean out depending on breakage...  hope that helps!

or it could be either the fuel pump or the oil pump  but also check ur ignition system as well.

You may have a problem with power to the fuel pump from the fuel pump relay, when you crank the engine the fuel pump gets power through the relay from the contacts in the ignition switch that make the starter solenoid engage and crank the engine, after the engine starts the fuel pumps gets it power from the relay through the run contacts in the ignition switch, you may have and issue with the ignition switch run circuit, pull the fuel pump relay and have someone turn the key off and on, (U will need a test light for this) the test light will light up and then shut off unless the engine starts, if it doesn't then the ignition switch may be the problem

Sounds like you have bad injectors, if you relace the injectors and this problem still occurs, you may have a fault in the fuel lines not passing the fue through or the computer may even be faulty and not pasing the correct amount of fuel info through, you are best off seeing a mechanic as you will have to anyway. thanks

You could remove the shift control cover and inspect the shifting forks to see if they are worn, broken, or bent. You could buy new forks if that is the case. You could pick up a complete used transmission, preferably one from a truck with lower mileage.

The VERY FIRST thing you need to check is both posts on the battery; remove them completely & clean them up with sandpaper. Make sure you remove ANY corrosion from the contact points. If that doesn't solve your problem, get your battery tested. After that, I would check starter contacts at the starter. Next, replace the starter contacts. Do it in that order to minimize your costs & headaches!

Hi,

An alternative possibility is a security immobilizer (if one is installed) or the computer is cutting out.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

On Toyota models in my country, the immobilizer normally is part of the security/anti-theft system. Its function is as the name implies is to prevent the engine to run but in some models it will allow it to start. My I inquire what alarm system is installed, is it a factory or after market, do you have a remote and is it functional? Additionally, is the IGN +12VDC consistent on the injectors/computer? Any other indicators when the engine cuts out such as flashing lights or the horn?

Please post back with the above additional information.

    Cheers.

Additionally, another expert emissionwiz has made mention of the fuel pump relay which is of course another possibility. You could likewise monitor for consistent IGN B+12VDC supply to the fuel pump soon as the engine started. He further stated about possible issue with "run contacts in the ignition switch". Although on some Asian models, there are actually two (2) fuel pump relays.

You may have a fuel injector that is bad. Check the resistance of each injector. The alternator may be giving AC (alternating current) spikes into your electrical system. Try temporarily removing the belt from the alternator and see how the engine runs.

1992 toyota 22re fluids out and puts out a lot of fume out the exhast

Floods out.Multiple causes. How does it run when warmed up?Still stink?
Check injectors: Run the engine up to 3,000 RPM and turn off the key, while flooring the gas pedal. If engine still runs, the injector(s) are stuck open.
Also check for a vacuum leak-that will cause the engine to run very rich.
Also may be an open circuit in the temp sensor(computer side). The engine may think it's very cold and richen up the mixture.

How is compression in cylinders? Have you pulled spark plugs to see how they look, perhaps one or 2 oil fowled?

1988 toyota 22re truck will crank and run perfect until you turn the engine off then it takes about a hour before it starts again engine just turns over.

First step, see what is missing when it wont start, fuel, or spark. Is it carburated? or fuel injected. (22re should be injected.)
