1993 Volvo Station Wagon, Engine Shuts Off intermittently and Turns back on after less than a minute

I have a 93 Volvo station Wagon. It has a lot of miles on it. The engine
shuts off every once in a while when driving the car. I changed the Air
Filter and which fixed the problem temporarily (meaning this did not
happen for a week or so) and then the problem resurfaced again. Basically
when driving the car it just shuts off the engine. Electrical system is
still running while the engine shuts off. Sometime the Wipers etc will be
running but the engine will just turn Off.

I have also noticed that the electricals do not activate sometimes. I turn
on the car and nothing happens. None of the electricals are active, i
cannot shift, the power windows will not work nothing. I just take out the
key and start it again everything works fine.

I am not sure if both the problems are related. I am not very knowledgable
and this is just a student car. I took this to a mechanic who charged $100
to tell me he needs more time with it.

So if some can give me some help i would appreciate it.

Thanks. Engine shuts off while driving

I had a very similar problem and did two things, which seemed to have solved the issue, at least for the last 80K miles.

I resolder the connections on the fuel pump relay, and 2nd (most likely the cause), I change the fuel filter, which (after removal), sounded like it had stones inside.

    No problems since.

Sounds like you need a new ignition switch.

It may be your mass air flow sensor, sometimes they get dirty and will cause the engine to shut off. It is located in the fresh air intake hose that runs to the air cleaner box. You will see a plug on the side of it with about 5 wires running into it. Go by a parts store and ask for a can of CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner, Part number 5110. Follow the instructions on the can. This should help.

I need a diagram for re-installing the serpantine belt on my Ford Taurus. It is a 93 station wagon with a 3.8 liter engine with Air Conditioning.

Your best bet is to register at www.autozone.com (it's free). Once registered you'll have access to dozens of car and truck manuals, most of which have detailed diagrams for doing most repairs.

No, the transmission can be removed without doing that. You will need to support the engine.

1995 Volvo Station Wagon headrest removal

You have to push in on the back of the seat as in the picture below. It really takes two people, one to push in and one to pull up on the head rest. http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/download/file.php?id=1748&mode=view

Our 1990 station wagon shuts off while driving. sometimes it will start up after a few minutes, but sometimes it won't start at all. we have changed sensors, computers, fly wheel, and lots of other stuff....

If you rate me nicely, I have the solution for you.
It's the fuel pump relay.
It is located behind the ashtray.
Above the fuses, and it's the one on the right.
In order to safely remove this common problem, you need to first remove the screws that hold the cigar lighter in place. Then remove housing, Et voila!
Happy motoring (again:)

I jsut bought this 93 ford escort lx station wagon

If this is a manual transmission the clutch has burned out, it may need to be replaced, if you do not do your own mechanic work I would suggest that you take it to a good local repair shop and have them check it out. If this is an automatic I would still suggest the same, but the actual problem could be more complex. Hope this helps, let me know.

sounds like you have a computer glitch. i would take it to any auto shop and pay 50 bucks so they can take a look at your e.c.u. (engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

The engine shutting down is probably a bad VSS(vehical speed sensor). The electrical problems are most likely due to loose wires and bad grounds. Clean and tighten all conections starting with the battery cables and the ground wires under the hood and under the dash. You have to find a mechanic who specializes in Volvos or you'll lose your shirt in trouble shooting and repairs.
