Question about 1987 Mazda 323 4-Door

1 Answer

Is it a Fuel Choke

Car recently had tune up. Idling beat is not uniform and there is indication that it may cut off but does not. No matter how long the engine is kept idling and the car is in reverse it will cut off. If I give it sudden gas or if I take my foot off the gas pedal it cuts off in reverse. Going forward the car will shake, buck and cut off. Turning the ignition will start the engine promptly.

Once car begins to work properly after the above, it continues to accelerate and only when I am slowing down or come to a stop light it threatens to do the above.

The top part of the carburator was sprayed. The module in the distributor was changed. My mechanic says that the only thing left is to clean the gas tank which to my knowledge has never been cleaned. Car is mazda 323 1987 model, 4-door sedan

The speedometer was out a few days. I have been driving it daily for 14 years. I have never had to use the choke in 14 years. My mechanic had done the spraying with engine running. No leak was found. Hence the troubleshooting to the module within the distributor. This was replaced. Same problem.
It is intended to take down the gas tank to be cleaned.

Car works well when driving. When it has to be restarted after 1 hour the symptoms resume.

The problem you are stating here could be a combination of problems, meaning it could not be solve with a single solution.

based from your description, it could be starving fom gas .

it would starve from gas if the filter is clogged( fuel filter) then before the carburator, there is still a strainer. might be a good place to check that one too.

then the tank as your mechanic has stated, could be dirty and needs to go down.
another thing to look at the tank is the water. since it is getting cold, water condensate couls slip in specially on cold weather.

then the carburator itself. it may have a clogged cavity or dirt could have accumulated and could not be solve by spraying with carburator cleaners.

try those things first and thanks for asking me,

Have 1999 kia s.u.v.and it cuts out and sometimes dies when idling at red light

The things to check would be your fuel pump, your fuel relay and your fuel filter. Seeing the age of your vehicle also would indicate that a tune up would help immensely if this has not ever been done.

Do you have a check engine light? If so, go to an auto parts store and have them scan for a code.

How can I make my Nissan laurel c31 heat fast before I drive it. Or where can I find the choke on the 1984 model

if it had a manual choke you would see it on the dash board , i'd get the engine tuned as a vehicle of that age could well have an auto choke mechanism so may need attention to that

Hard Starting In Morning

check that the auto choke is properly adjusted as it indicates that the engine needs a rich mixture to start when cold.

Were is the automatic choke situated my car is revving to high

Your car doesn't have a choke. Fuel injected engines alter the mixture using information from the sensors to give the right mixture all the time, thus negating the need for a choke. This is only for carbureted engines, and your car is not. If it's idling fast, you can change the settings on your idle set screw, or have it tuned.

Recurring Mystery Problem in a 1986 Suzuki Alto. (Idle related)

Bad fuel, water in the fuel, dirt in the fuel.

Drain the fuel tank completely.

Pour in a gallon or two of fresh fuel.

See how it goes.

Put some of the old fuel in a glass bottle, hold it up in front of a light and see if you can see any foreign material in it...

2001 v6 4.0 ranger erratic idling at stop

That's where I would start. Get a spray bottle with water in it and a few drops of dish soap just to make it sudsy. Start the truck and spray around all of the vacuum lines, intake manifold, etc. If the idle goes up, that's your leak. Good luck

Is it a Gas Choke

how many miles on this car? providing the choke is all the way open at operating temps and the engine is still not smooth and the tune-up parts are new, i would search for a vacuum leak somewhere on the intake manifold and carb. using carb cleaner with engine running spray around intake and lower carb if idle changes, you have found a leak. make sure the choke is working properly!! dirty fuel tank is possible but not likely, with a tune-up i would assume the fuel filter was changed. was it dirty? was the timing checked? does car run well at speed driving down the road?
