The main reason is the car is underpowered for better fuel economy. This model is a gutless wonder, only thing worse is a Smart for 2 car.

After changing the alternator on my car the EPC warning indicator came on and was wondering what that means

Electronic power control(EPC). Its pretty important. Its not likely a fuse. Most likely you forgot a vacuum line or knocked a line loose. Check over the hoses near the alternator that might have been moved or damaged.

Loss of acceleration and power on 2003 dodge ram 1500

The acceleration may be an issue with the clutch or with engine.  If it is a manual tranny, you may have a worn out clutch.  For automatic, you may need to have the solenoid cleaned or have the tranny serviced
Other issue could be on the engine, check first the fuel filter especially if you encounter loss of power when running.

On acceleration the engine stutters like it's ready to quit. Could this be a fuel pump problem beginning?

I have acceleration problems at times here and there.

sounds like a spark plug/ spark plug wire problem. i would change the plugs and wires this is a cheap fix and can be done with little effort.
