Depending on if the the timing chain/belt has been replaced it'll be be oil, filter, fuel filter, brake fluid, coolant ect. If it's manual gearbox oil and clutch fluid. If it's auto it may need a trans service, brake pads it all depends on what its like and what needs attention. There is a minor service and there is a major service
Sorry i strip and rebuild a manual gearbox and a auto as well but the modern electronics is just way above my head ,this fault could even be the actual computer controlling the gearbox ,i have no idea so please consult a auto box expert
re/check your oil level as it possibly lower then you thought ,as an auto gearbox needs the level to be full, dont rev the gearbox trying to get it to move this will damage the bands inside the gear box,
im not a vw auto trans expert, but maybe your auto trans needs replacement of the fluid. thats usually the fix with other autos. dont think the engines heat matters, but the gearbox prob heats up on its own as well.
I had the same problem I changed the transmission fluid & put a new filter in the trans, this fixed it good until I put my foot down to overtake the trans kicked down to 2nd gear & the hold light started flashing again & the trans started slipping again. I stressed over it for a day or 2 & then I took it out for a drive & thrashed it, Low & behold it came right. When you change fluid its impossible to get all the old fluid out because the torque converter holds a liter or two under pressure, so when I put my foot down some of the gunk blew through & blocked the pump it looses pressure & cant change gear. You need to get it flushed by a transmission specialist
