Open Question

G37 Manual Shift Mode

My G37 intermittently reverts to the automatic shift mode when the stick is in the manual position only allowing manual shifting with the paddles. The only way to get the manual functionality with the stick is to shut the engine down and restart. I don't want to have to Ctrl+Alt+Del everytime I want to manually shift my car. I've taken it in to the dealership, low and behold they couldn't duplicate the problem. Please help

    It sounds like to me that there is an intermittent malfunction of the switch/sensor below the shifter that is telling the TCM that you are not in manual mode when you actually are, thus when the car is shut off the TCM resets and all is normal again. Of course they won't be able to diagnose it without experiencing the symptom, and since the car is under warranty they have to duplicate it. Although when I was a service advisor sometimes my tech and I would have to replace a part here and there if we couldn't duplicate and let the customer drive it to see if it eliminated the problem. That may be too much to ask a dealer especially if you aren't that cozy with them.

Define won't crank ? I'am assuming the key will turn to the start position ! When doing so does the starter spin the engine or not ? Trying to define your problem of won't crank . If when you turn the key to start position an the starter spins the engine over but doesn't start an run , this is a cranks no start condition . If nothing happens when you turn the key to start , this is a no crank no start condition . Your vehicle has a safety system , shift interlock , won't let it shift out of park if the brake pedal isn't pressed . Won't let the key turn off either . Electronics involved , locking solenoid's etc.... Floor or column shift ?
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock solenoid (serviced as the automatic transmission shift lock actuator), as well as the body control module (BCM) and the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM). The shift lock solenoid is located within the floor shift control assembly with vehicles equipped with floor shift.
• The BCM controls the voltage supply circuit of the shift lock control solenoid. The following conditions must be before the BCM will supply voltage to the shift lock control solenoid.
The BCM controls the voltage to the shift lock control solenoid through the shift lock control solenoid controlled voltage circuit. The following conditions must be met before the BCM will supply voltage to the shift lock solenoid:
• The ignition is in the ON position.
• The ECM/PCM sends an input via GMLAN serial data to the BCM indicating the transmission is in the PARK position.
• The BCM determines the brake pedal is applied according the brake pedal position.
Since the shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded, the BCM supplies voltage to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, mechanically unlocking the shift lever allowing the driver to move the shift lever out of the PARK position as the solenoid energizes. When the brake pedal is not applied, the BCM turns the control voltage output of the shift lock control solenoid OFF, de-energizing the shift lock control solenoid. The de-energized solenoid mechanically locks the shift lever in the PARK position.
During remote start operation, the BCM will de-energize the shift lock control circuit, locking the shift lever in the PARK position.

Plus the reverse lock out !
The reverse lockout system is a safety feature which prevents an inadvertent shift into reverse at speeds above 5 km/h (3 mph). The system consists of the following components:
• The engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM)
• The reverse lockout solenoid
With the ignition ON, battery voltage is supplied directly to reverse lockout solenoid. At forward speeds above 5 km/h (3 mph), the ECM/PCM commands the reverse lockout solenoid ON by grounding the control circuit of the solenoid. This energizes the solenoid and mechanically prevents the shift lever from being moved into the REVERSE position. At forward speeds below 5 km/h (3 mph), the ECM/PCM commands the reverse lockout solenoid OFF, de-energizing the solenoid, which allows the shift lever to move into the REVERSE position.

Power Mode Master
This vehicles BCM functions as the power mode master (PMM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determination the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information, and so the PMM will activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. Refer to Power Mode Description and Operation for a complete description of power mode functions.
You have no clue of the electronics in your vehicle , your best bet have it towed to the Buick dealer .

2003 Silverado 4WD. Service 4WD dash light comes on after engaging 4WD and acts up by engaging itself randomly for several days, then goes back to normal.


Check connection at the 4X4 control module , check power and grounds . Do you know how to do basic electrical testing ? Does your truck have manual or automatic trans mission ? Which transfer case does yours have ?

The NVG 263 transfer case features a three button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. When the ignition is in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module (TCCM) starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/gear position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position begins flashing to inform the driver that the TCCM has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp continues to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been engaged. Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator for the new position remains ON constantly. In the event that the TCCM can not or will not complete the shift, the indicator returns to the previously selected position; this is a Transfer Case Shift Control Switch Indicator Flashes, then Returns to Previous Mode condition.

The NVG 263 transfer case provides the driver with 4 manual mode/gear positions:
• 2HI - 2 Wheel Drive high range
• 4HI - 4 Wheel Drive high range
• 4LO - 4 Wheel Drive low range
• Neutral

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid

The automatic transmission shift lock control switch

With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Voltage flows through the normally closed contacts of the automatic transmission shift lock control switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to be move out of the PARK position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed ?

Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement . If there is no abnormal friction, replace the shift lock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement .

Changed the dashboard switch for 4wd. That didn't work. Still cannot get into 4wd.


The NVG 263 transfer case features a three button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position begins flashing to inform the driver that the TCCM has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp continues to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been engaged. Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator for the new position remains ON constantly. In the event that the TCCM can not or will not complete the shift, the indicator returns to the previously selected position; this is a Transfer Case Shift Control Switch Indicator Flashes, then Returns to Previous Mode condition.
The New Venture Gear model NVG 246 RPO NP8 transfer case is a two speed automatic, active, transfer case. The NVG 246 EAU provides 5 modes, Auto 4WD, 4HI, 4LO, 2HI and Neutral. The Auto 4WD position allows the capability of an active transfer case, which provides the benefits of on-demand torque biasing wet clutch and easy vehicle tuning through software calibrations. The software calibrations allow more features such as flexible adapt ready position and clutch preload torque levels. The technology allows for vehicle speed dependent clutch torque levels to enhance the performance of the system. For example, the system is calibrated to provide 0-5 ft lb of clutch torque during low speed, low engine torque operation, and predetermined higher torque for 40 km/h (25 mph) and greater. This prevents crow-hop and binding at low speeds and provides higher torque biases at higher vehicle speeds, in order to enhance stability.

The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.

P0826 Nissan - Manual Mode Switch Circuit
Possible causes: - Faulty Manual mode select switch (Built into control device, shifter)
- Faulty Manual mode position select switch (Built into control device, shifter)
- Faulty Control Device (Shifter)
- Control Device harness is open or shorted
- Control Device circuit poor electrical connection

When is the code detected? When an impossible pattern of switch signals is detected, a malfunction is detected.

Possible symptoms: - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

P0826 Nissan Description: Manual mode switch is installed in shift control device. The manual mode switch sends shift up and shift down switch signals to Transmission Control Module (TCM) with Control Area Network (CAN) communication.

TCM sends the switch signals to combination meter via CAN communication line. Then manual mode switch position is indicated on the shift position indicator.

2013 GMC 2500hd will not shift into manual mode. Is there a way to adjust the shift cable?


Have you tried moving the gear shift from D to S or M? The manual mode will not work long as the shifter is in the D position. Must be moved to the next lower position and then press the + button for up-shift and the - button for downshift.

Car is stuck in 4wd low HELP!!!


Vehicles built After Jan 2002 may have Electronically Controlled Shift Mechanism. In the sorento's there are the switch knob eitheir if this one the auto or manual . If your Transfer case is difficult to shift or will not shift into desired range. 1) Transfer case electronically controlled shift system malfunction. 2) If vehicle was operated for an extended period in 4HI mode on dry surface, driveline torque load may cause difficulty. Drive the vehicle in a straight line and momentarily release the accelerator. The transfer case can then be shifted to the desired mode. 3) Insufficient or incorrect lubricant. 4) Internal transfer case components binding, worn, or damaged. Other possible causes are; Different Sized Tires; Charging System Diagnostic Codes; Transfer Case Control Module; INTERMITTENT WIRING AND CONNECTORS; Transfer Case Selector Switch; Transfer Case Mode Sensor; Mode Select Circuit open/shorted. At this moment, try putting it in nuetral and shifting your knob to the auto (ex models) or 2wd (lx) and see if it's click into your position, if not, check out your owners manual and follow steps. If you still can't get it unstuck, could be fuse relay or fuse that malfuctioned your control shift system, or simply the above mentioned. Would recommend you taking it in to your dealship to have them see what is causing the promblem.
