How do I pull out an alternator on a 2000 Mercury Cougar V6?

I'm having trouble getting to it. Jtroutman@dallasrail.com

Follow service manual procedures given by the manufacturer for the generator you are working on for disassembling, inspecting, testing, and rebuilding AC generators. Remember, improper connections to an AC generator can destroy it.
AC generator removal varies according to the engine size, engine placement, and vehicle accessories (such as power steering and air conditioning). The following is the typical procedure for removal and replacement of the AC generator.

  • Place fender covers over the fenders
  • Disconnect the battery ground cable
CAUTION Never attempt to remove the alternator or disconnect any wires to the alternator without first disconnecting the battery negative cable.
  • Disconnect and label the wiring harness connections to the alternator (Painters Masking tape works very well for labeling Automotive wiring).
  • Loosen the alternator pivot bolt.
  • Remove the bolt that attaches the alternator to the adjustment arm.
  • Rotate the alternator to loosen the drive belt and disengage the belt from the pulley. Be careful that any spacers that are used in mounting are kept with their original bolts. This will make correct reinstallation much easier.
  • While supporting the alternator remove the pivot bolt.
  • Remove the alternator from the vehicle.
To reinstall the alternator, reverse the removal procedure.
To adjust the belt tension, leave the pivot and adjusting arms loose. Look up the belt tension specification for the vehicle you are working on. Using a belt tension gauge on the belt apply pressure to the alternator until the correct belt tension registers on the gauge and tighten the mounting and adjustment bolts to the specified torque specification.

The problem removeing the alternator,is access to the top mount bolt.To access this bolt you have to also remove the drivers side tire and use long extensions from the drivers side. This takes two people one to guide the socket and one to turn the rachet

My 2000 Mercury Cougar was not charging, so I changed the alternator and battery. Now, I still have the same problem. When I take the battery cable off to see if the alternator is charging the car dies....


Well that is a good and easy test. The alternator you just replaced is probably bad. Once the vehicle starts its the alternator's job to keep the vehicle running. You need to take that alternator back to the auto parts store and exchange it for a good working one.

I WAS DRIVING HOME AND HAD HEATER ON, ALL OF A SUDDEN IT STARTED BLOWING COLD AIR. WHY WOULD THIS HAPPEN? THE NEXT DAY I WAS DRIVING AND THE TEMPERATURE GUAGE STARTED GONG UP....PULLED OVER BEFORE IT GOT...


Check the antifreeze level. It could be low, When the air turns cold all of the sudden there is an air pocket in the cooling system. Watch for coolant leaks and if it continues to get hot replace the thermostat.

Battery light stays on 2000 mercury cougar with v6 engine battery light stays on


Your alternator isn't putting 14 volts out to the battery. Check the stator wire on the alternator and the 3 wire plug make sure there is no gap on any of the alternator connectors and they are on VERY firm!

Hook up a multimeter inside your car and watch the battery voltage! if under 14volt you got an alternator problem!

Yes! No need for the engine to come out at all. But there is going to be alot of parts coming out, you will need a manual from aoutozone or advance $14.99 It will tell you step by step.

Where is the alternater on the 1999 couger


which engine do you have? if you have a v6 the alternator is located on the passenger side of the engine in the lower rear corner. there is also a recall on that in regards to the voltage sensing system google mercury alternator recall, also make sure the connectors on the alernator are good and tight check the terminals inside the connector as well, my buddies 2000 cougar had the same problem and it turned out to be a loose terminal on the connector to the alternator. on the v6 version the alternator isn't all that easy to get to. i'm not sure about the 4 cyl versoin but if you look around you'll find it, usually on the passenger side

Mercury Cougar 1999 V6 Starting problem.


To remove the alternator, you have to remove the serpentine belt. They have a tensioner in which you place a socket wrench and pull on it and it loosens the belt. Before removing the belt notice how it is routed. Some vehicles have a diagram on the hood or on the front near the grill.You take the belt off. Then you remove the alternator by removing the bolts attaching the alternator to the engine. There are two or three bolts you have to remove. Two of them are fairly big bolts. About a size 14 metric or so. Disconnect the negative battery cable battery so you won't hit any grounds.Then take off the plugs from the alternator and the small nuts that hold the wires. Notice how they are placed before removing so you can know where each plug goes.Then replace the new alternator. Plug it back up and install the same way you took it out.Replace the belt starting from the left to right and pull on the tensioner and reinstall.
