On an American designed charging system the truck should remain running, on Japanese cars it will die, but to anser your question yes you almost surely have a defective alternator. Make sure the battery is fully charged before the new Alt. is installed, if you don't the new Alt can be overheated and damaged.

2002 Neon. Radio shut off, lights went off and heat shut off, and started idling bad. Eventually it staled. Put in a new battery and it started right up. Next day same thing. Is it the altenator or wiring...

sounds like the regulator is bad in the altenator. Start vehicle and disconnect negative cable from battery. If it stays running you have another problem. If it stalls out right away the altenator isnt working.

Where is the voltage regulator?

the voltage regulator is built into the altenator,if you are having a charge problem, theres an easy way to check to see if it;s charging, while the engine is running disconnect the positive side post of battery, careful not to ground it to anything metal, if car dies,no charge from altenator, if it stays running, reconnect the positive post, if not you'll need to leave that disconnected to replace that altenator.if you need further assistance from fixya please post your question and we'll be happy to help you.thank you for choosing!!

Battery & alternator test good. Battery runs

from the sounds of it ?? could be the altenator ,a diode is allowing the current to run to earth, disconnect battery when not using the vehicle ,if it starts ok after having the battery disconnected then make sure a boot (trunk) light isnt staying or something stupid like the abs pump or suspension leveling`pump if fitted .But the altenator is the most common problem

Need to hook up the altenator. thick wire from altenator is loose and i don't know where it connects to.

It sounds like you have answered your own question here...? the thick wire from the alternator connecting to the starter terminal feeds electricity back to the battery though the starter cable when you are running... if you have a manual you can see for yourself in the wiring charts. Hope this helps...

Bmw altenator

sounds like a bad battery connection check for bad loose corroded terminals at the battery and check at opposite end which you may have to crawl under the car for that make certain if you have disconnected any ground wires located throughout the car that you put them back and from my experience I have seen them do allot of strange things as to the running of a vehicle when removed and not put back.dont try to check altenator by pulling off one of the batt cables that worked in the old days but can produce voltage spikes nowadays which can destroy many of the electronics used in the running of your vehicle

Battary light would not go off

Have the battery and the alternator tested under a heavy electrical load. Some of the cheap battery testers will not indicate a bad or weak cell. Also your alternator may not put out enough amperage to keep up with the electrical demands placed upon it. A good battery tester is a carbon pyle tester. Good luck.

Start the car and disconnect one of the terminals on the battery, while the car is running, if the cars is still running after you disconnect that terminal then your altenator is working properly. If the car shuts off, then you will have to replace your altenator.
