Question about 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais

1990 Calais 3.3L No Start

Just changed ignition switch and tumbler for unrelated reasons.
Car will not start. Symptoms are no spark/no injector pulse. Computer has no codes. Fuel pump cycles fine and there is good fuel pressure at the rail. When using diagnostic scanner, there is no RPM while turning car over....also shows 0 spark advance. Want to get thoughts before I start by throwing a crank sensor into it.

It would be the crank angle sensor which tells the computer if the engine is turning and at what speed and when to spark

My 1991 olds mobile cutlass calais wont start,after I added fuel injector cleaner because,the car was having hesistating problems below 25 miles an hour and it might of been a spark plug problem or fuel...


When you chaged the air filter & sprayed Gumout carb cleaner, you got rid of a little gunk in the
air intake, but when you added the fuel injector cleaner (its the same stuff as carburator cleaner) to the fuel tank, you "cleaned out" ALL the ****/gunk/buildup/dirt in the fuel system which has built up since 1991 and sent it straight to the fuel filter, which is now clogged. The reason that the car tries to start, but fails, is that it'll successfully burn up any fuel that gets past the clogged fuel filter, but the engine consumes that small amount of gasoline quickly, then dies.
Your solution: change the fuel filter.
The fuel filter is located:
Under vehicle, driver side, below seating area, near fuel tank, mounted on frame rail in fuel line

Has spark has fuel pressure but wont start


Does it have injector pulse to deliver fuel to the cylinders? You can check to see if the injectors are getting power by probing the red wire to the injectors, with the key on it should be battery + voltage, a common cause of this kind of problem is the ignition starter switch on the top lower part of the steering column. You can also buy a small tool that plugs into the injector connector called a "NOID", (about $5) it flashes when the engine is cranked if the injectors are been pulsed to deliver fuel.

My 1990 Mitsubishi Montero Sport will crank but will not start. I tried to use starting fluid through the air filter shaft but the car still won't start. The car has been stalling before when I am idle and...


Given the year of the Montero I expect the ECU has failed or the component within the distributor which tells the ECU when to send a spark. Check for spark or fuel injector pulse. To check fuel injector pulse rent NOID lights from auto parts store. If no pulse I expect the Distributor if no fuel I expect the ECU

1990 cutlass ciera w/3300 v6, won't start, fuel presure is 45psi, has good spark, has new crank sensor. still won't start, what next.


If it has spark, the crank sensor is working. If the fuel pressure is 45psi, that's good.

1990 gmc 6500 topkick with no spark or injector pulse. all 4 wires on the ignition coil have battery voltage with key on. is coil shorted or is the ignition module bad?


You are jumping to conclusions. Slow down.
No spark AND no injector pulse indicates none of the desired outputs were triggered. The ignition module makes spark when it receives a crankshaft position sensor signal, and then transfers control of that spark to the computer after it starts. The module takes its crank sensor signal and generates an RPM count that it forwards to the PCM(main computer) which is used for triggering the injectors and controlling timing. SO, if you had a bad crank sensor OR a bad ignition module, you could lose both spark AND fuel. a coil would not disable injector pulse. modules RARELY fail in a manner that disables RPM reference to the computer causing it to not fire the injectors...At this point, I would TEST the crank sensor as the next step. If its easier, 1 of the wires on the module goes directly there so you can test the crank sensor at the module.

90 2.3L calais 2 and 3 cylinders missfire (wet).Change plugs,coils,ignition module,housing,computer etc. 2 and 3 still miss. Compressures and fuel injections are ok. Anyone has a idea? Thanks!


Hmmmm...
This evening when it starts getting dark, open the hood, start the car and look under hood & look for sparks from the sparkplug cable to engine ground. Or sparks near ignition module. Look especially close where the cables are "bound" together with a "finger" cable mount ( I forget what you call that).

This may sound silly, but check the cable routing to be sure that cable #2 & #3 are not swapped.... really...

By the way, inspect the old ignition module for a hairline crack. And don't mark anything with a lead pencil (carbon arc).

NO SPARK AT PLUGS


Its probably the electrical part under the ignition coils follow your spark plug wires to the back of your firewall and remove both ignition coils and there is an small electrical plate that needs to be replaced and you should get your vehicle running because I had the same problem

1990 montero no start. No power to open injectors, good fuel pump


Check the injector pulses with an osciliscope. If you arent getting a pulse check the ecu. I have cooked 2 of them. One killed my ignition but had good fuel. the second time it wouldnt open the injectors but had good spark. A quick check is to take the ecu out and take the cover off. then look for burnt electrical components.
