Question about Ford Fairmont

1 Answer

Low Oil pressure in Ford 351C engine in streetrod. Was fine until a drive last week. Now has 15psi idle, and 0-5 above idle, not game to lift revs higher than 1500or so. I've dropped the pan and the oil pickup is fine, pulled the main caps and all are ok. Maybe oilpump or a bigend spun? There was no bearing noise though.. Any other ideas? Maybe filter failure, that would be strange though.

Thanks, could be the pressure relief, although it was ok a week ago. Bearing clearances are good as its a reasonably fresh engine, unless I spun one. It was an electric gauge, but I also checked with another gauge, and the reading were similar. I expected to find a problem with the pickup but its ok, and I looked at the mains while under there and they are ok too. I'll check the bigends while I'm going, and if nothing found I will change the pump. New filter and oil and cross my fingers...

Your pump has its own pressure relief that maybe letting go too soon.Is your pressure sensor electrical or do you have a proper pressure gauge? You maybe getting a faulty reading.Only other thing would be excessive main bearing clearances.

low fuel pressure tops my list.
does the cluster lamp CEL glow , key
then go out, running (idling) it must
of not that means scan me , if in usa, are you?
in canada its different.
this engine makes power in limhome mode.
so my guess , low fuel pressure. the FPRs are failing now
this old, btw
it can stick open and pressure drops to 15psi and not 35,45psi.
btw , that was guess, and as most guesses, useless.
i do the tests, and least the results tell me truth.
i can rattle off, 10 top reasons or or even 50 , inside engine.
Low power has many causes, does it help guessing?
there are like 1 to 10 tests, to do and bam, cause.
folks that love to guess, send endless useless cash.

I i can tick off many top causes
your engine dont read my list it does what it wants. fate, miles, abuse, bad service, endless this topic. truely.
1: needs a tuneup.,
2: compression (cyl) low, its and old car.
3: maf dirty
4: low fuel pressure FPR , is toasted.
5: cat melted.
6: huge vacuum leak , in the main induction and Air fuel ratio goes super lean.
that top pipe for air on top engine loves to fail
and large number of ways, and all LEAK AIR.
I seen over 10 like this. even broken mount to it and sucking air like mad.
those are the top fails as is a slipped timing belt
but that is part of the tuneup, its replaced at 60kmiles, if you skip this service point it fails.
it slips and compressing drops by 1/2 and so does power. seen 100s like that.
why not just get car serviced if you dont own mech. tools?

What causes oil check light to show when a car is idling and off when the car is eccelarated?

It is all to do with your oil pressure.
At idle 800rpm with a warm engine your pressure mite be say 15psi.
At 2000rpm that same engine would have a oil pressure of 40psi.
Your oil pressure warning sender is set at about 20psi.
It is only a warning light and not a lot to worry about for 15psi at idle is enough to keep up with a engine that is not under a lot of strain.

Well it could be the sending unit for the gauge.
But odds are the oil pump or engine bearings are worn out.
As the engine warms up, the metal spaces expand and the oil gets thinner. The oil pressure drops some under normal conditions, but not more than 10 or 15psi. Normal idle pressure with the engine warmed up is probably 25psi.
You could check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to make sure its not the sending unit.
Once the oil pressure starts staying below 20psi for long periods you'll start hearing noises.

Mileage? replacing the oil pump never fixes a oil pressure problem. has the oil pressure been checked with a mechanical gauge? If it really is "0" then the engine has to come apart and bearing clearances checked.

The oil pressure sensor light keeps coming on after the engine has heated up and driven awhile. We have replace the oil pressure switch but keep having the same problem? Any more suggestions?

. THATS USUALLY A SING OF THE OIL PUMP GOING BAD/WORN BEARING AT CRANK CAMS . WHEN ENGINES COLD THE OIL IS THICKER AND WHEN THE OIL HEATS UP IT GET THINNER CAUSING LOW ENGINE OIL PRESSURE. IF USUALLY THE LIGHTS COMES "ON" AT IDLE AT NORMAL TEMPETURE AND IT GOES AWAY WHEN ACCCELERATED. THOSE ARE SINGS OF WEAK OIL PRESSURE. ALSO CHECK THE THE WIRE TO THE OIL PRESSURE SENDER FOR RUBBING OR WEAR. HOPE THIS HELPS. THE BEST WAY TO BE SURE IS GETTING A OIL PRESSURE TESTER AT HARBOR FREIGHT THERE LIKE $20 OR SO AND TEST THE PRESSURE. AN AVERAGE SHOULD BE ABOVE 15PSI AT IDLE AND HIGHER 2500 RMS AT 22,000 35,000 PSI GOOD. HOPE THIS CAN HELP OR GIVE YOU A LEAD OR HLEP... SEND ME A FEEBACK PLEASE THANKS

Low oil pressure after engine warms up in 94 blazer with 4.3

I have a 99 blazer and ever since I have owned it, it reads lower in pressure when idling, but will go up too 40 while driving. This is normal for the vehicle. If the pressure gets real low, and stays low, it means its time for an oil change.

As long as the pressure goes up when you give it gas, it is fine.

Oil pressure

Have someone put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it. If pressure is at or below 15psi hot at idle, likely you have an internal engine problem (bearings etc) If you have been driving it like this for any amount of time, and pressure is low, likely your choices are either drive it till it dies or replace the engine. If pressure is normal, change the sending unit and look elsewhere for the noise.
I know you aren't happy about my answer (no one likes bad news) but those are the facts.
good luck.
