Question about 1994 Honda Civic

1 Answer

Electronics? My 1994 Honda Civic 4 speed Auto 3 door hatch Limited Edition kicks up and down from 4th to 3rd gear when cruising on the highway between 80-100klms/hr. The engine light comes on sometimes, and the speedo needle goes crazy like a blade of grass blowing in the wind or won't work at all.

Sounds like it may be a faulty speed sensor. This sensor is connected to the transmission and the speedometer cable connects to it as well. I'm not 100% sure, but if it were to go bad it may trip the check engine light. Hope this helps, good luck

92 Honda Civic DX-hatch back, 1.5L Speedometer is acting like a tach while driving at highway speeds. Sometimes it will zero out and then it will peg. This is while maintaining a constant speed.

I believe that in '91 or '92 Honda switched from an analog (cable-driven) speedometer to a digital (sending unit/electronic head) version. Likely problem is the sending unit attached to the transmission. Try this website for a replacement and an image of the sending unit: http://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto/parts/92/honda/civic/switches_sensors_and_senders/speedometer_impulse_sender.html?3593=89758

Good luck.

What is D3 in autogear

it will be more noticeable at highway speeds if you use D3 as the transmission won't use the 4th and 5th gears. This will result in higher engine revving (watch the tach) and will use more gas. The car may feel like it's accelerating faster at these speeds, but at the same time, engine braking will slow it more when you take your foot off the gas.King Scanner G3 for Toyota Tis and Honda Him

D3 exists if you are going up (or down) a mountain and want the engine to be limited to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear rather than "searching" for the best of 3rd, 4th, and 5th frequently (although with the grade logic Honda employs this has never annoyed me). ymmv (your mountains may vary).

D3 Doesn't hurt anything; slightly more fuel consumption as the engine will rev higher, but better to be in "D" for normal driving and let the transmission use its full range of gears

2003 honda civic you drive on the street with D or

Drive the vehicle in "D". The D selection is the overdrive. You can consider the overdrive as a fourth gear. The D3 is simply third gear, and if driven in D3, the transmission will never shift into overdrive when needed.

Automatic gears

Honda transmissions,as well as most other overdrive transmissions, should be driven at all times in drive 4,or the overdrive position, with the exception of severe driving conditions, such as towing a load, extremely hilly terrain,or long uphill grades, the trans should be taken out of overdrive, and placed in the drive 3 position. This is to prevent the perpetual shifting back and forth of the trans from 3rd into 4th,back to 3rd,back to 4th,back to 3rd,that would eventually damage both the 3rd and 4th gear clutch discs and components.
