Usually around 100,000 miles depending on how the car has been driven. Or just wait till it breaks. I've seen over 200,000 miles on the original belt. If it were mine, I'd do it every 75,000 to 125,000 miles. I don't like being stuck in the middle of nowhere :)

Timing Belt replacement- two recomendations by mazda manual

they are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.

As for cost, about $400 is my guess.

Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.

How much should I reasonably pay to replace the Timing belt in my 2002 Mazda Protege 5?

replacement of timing belt $350-$500. aftermarket shops will try to sell you a package containg a belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley. the dealer will just replace the belt, they might recommend to replace the water pump if there are alot of miles on the car, they will also inspect the pulley for wear.
