Are you getting spark ? Take off a spark plug, place it against a ground. It should have a sprk when you turn the engine.

I have a 96 dodge stratus that wont start the fuel pump and filter are new i have spark to all my plugs


recheck fuel make shure power is getting to it. could be security system set off or a bad new fuel pump pending on time in vehicle

When taking the distributor off do i need to set the timing of the distributor


Yes. Roll the engine over onto #1 cylinder TDC and remove the distubuter cap. Place a mark on the body of the distributer inline with the rotor point before you do anything else. This mark may already be there, but if not, it needs to be permanent, such as a tiny chisel cut. Now you can withdraw the distributer. When replacing, it may have to engage the oil pump drive, so be careful you engage this properly. If not engaged, the distributer will not go down fully. As you inset the distributer, align the rotor with your mark. Make several attemps until you get it in pace and your mark lined up.You will notice the distributer shaft will turn as you insert it so you need to allow for that. Use a timing light to finally set the ignition timing.

1989 Dodge B350 Fuel injected 5.9L Starts right up, runs alright. Then when you get up over 45mph, it starts to knock. You let off the gas & it stops knocking. Give it the gas, and it starts again.


Multiple choices - depending on how the engine power changes during the knocking...
If power remains, then your timing is too advanced. That could be caused by a bad chip or a bad initial distributer setting. (Check the engine timing).

If power lessens, they it is likely that you are running lean - due to a lack of fuel pressure. Causes: Fuel filter clogged, fuel pump failing, fuel pressure regulator failing.

Can think of no other causes. Check these and I suspect you find the fault and the cure.

This is most likley not an issue of fuel. this sounds like an ignition module issue. These are all signs of a failing ignition module. On engines with no distributer it will be located under the coils. On engines with distributers it is located on bottom or in bottom of distributer.good luck.

Difficulty starting after stopping for a short while


Without more input I'll give you two scenarios 1 the starter is showing signs of weakness and hen it gets hot it does not have the strength to spin the motor as it should. 2. The ignition timing needs adjusted, it may be advanced a bit and need retarding, especially with the low grades of fuel we are getting these days , you might try a higher grade of fuel or possibly an octane booster which you add when re-fueling.

Did you sync up the engine properly when you reinstalled the timing belt/chain? It is possible to be on the marks and be 180 degrees off. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft then check the rotor position.If it doesn't point to number one wire terminal position roll the engine over until the crank lines up to the timing mark again. The distributer needs to be pointing the wire terminal that goes to number cylinder.Any other position is unacceptable and you can't simply turn the distributer to number one either You need to retime the crankshaft to the camshft making sure that the distrubitor points to number one and both valves for number one cylinder are completely closed.

Engine missing


hi there you need to check to make shure that your alternator is making atleat 13.50 volts wher you recharge the battery sounds like your alt could need some work . let me explain the computer needs 13.00 volts dc to run correctly fuel injectors too lets just put a volt meter across the battery wonce you have it charged and running let me know with a fixya if the alternator isnt 13,00 volts ok thanks for using a great problem solving website like fixya , good luck

remove and plug vacume line on the distributer and find timing specs on the motor in the vehicle using timing light hook transducer cable to no# 1 cylinder set the idle to manufacturers specs make shure motor is warmed up to operating temp now point thr timing light at the timing plate on crankshaft pulley start the engine and watch for the mark on the harmonic pulley see where it is at when running now if the mark is not lining up with sugested degrees from manufacturer then u must loosen bolt on distributer only loosen 1/4 turn now rotate distributer clockwise or counterclockwise this will make the mark on the harmonic ballancer allign with manufactures required timing specs after aligning marks tighten distributer and unplug distributer vacume line and plug it back into distributer. and test if u need anymore specifics plz read manual carefully good luck
