You may also have the Pass-II key alarm system installed. To tell, the ignition key will have a black sensor on both sides. If this is the case, 1 of 2 things is happening. 1) The key needs replacing with a similar style key only from the dealer. 2) The coils in the ignition that hit the key sensors are in need of replacing. See dealer for more info.

Re: 1998 Buick LeSabre Problem
The crankshaft position sensor may have a fraied wire inside of the pickup coil in the sensor. This can sometimes cause an occasional problem. There is also a computer ground that will sometimes go out on those.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

These cars are notorious for failing antitheft systems. When this happens, the car temporarily turns off the starter as a theft prevention measure. It normally resets in about ten minutes, and warns you with a light on your dash that reads SECURITY or ANTITHEFT. This link explains the problem, and how to fix it.
Before changing out the starter, be sure that the SECURITY light is not illuminated on the dash. The anti theft security on these GM vehicles can actually disable the starter if it is starting to fail. I see people change starters way too often when its not the real problem. If that light is on, check this link http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/ If not, just repost this problem for more help
Read your comment on 8/18...Kzactly what I thought. always look at the basics...more times than not, you will find problems there, and , by checking, you eliminate false readings when doing other tests.
Given the amount of electronic's on your vehicle , an control modules , have a full vehicle scan done . Not at a parts , thier diagnostic tool will not check BCM -body control module , Instrument cluster , air bag module codes . Your vehicle maybe have communication problem between modules . Suggest you google GM class 2 serial data communication network .
I would say your best bet is to take it to the dealer and pay the $30 to have them run a computer check on it. Tell them you want a printout. They will probably be a little reluctant to give you a printout, but hey...if you are paying for them to tell you the problem, you should have the proof. Not all but some dealerships will tell you it is like a $400 part deep inside the dash that you can get to without special tools. When in all reality, it is as simple as a vacuum hose. That is why I work on them myself!
Hi not sure if this helps , but with my lesabre there is a ground under the carburetor that knocked out my A/C, horn , wipers and dash lights. part cost 3.00 . I just lead soldered to the clip and bolted it down and everything is working fine.
