Question about 1991 Toyota Celica

1 Answer

Surging and not shifting

I just purchased my 91 celica and it was badly neglected. At a stop the engine surges and you have to put it in neutral to keep it from dying. When you accelerate it does not shift soon enough and you have to feather the gas a little. Also when coasting at like 30mph the engine will rev up to 3+rpm before actual acceleration.

Change the transmission filter sounds like its clogged up. replace w/ name brand high milage transmission fluid. should fix you right up. if you take it to a shop you can ask to have the bands adjusted also, that should give you another 5- 10,000 miles on trans. maybe more. good luck

sounds a little like a cruise control problem.
they used to have a centering adjustment that kept the speed within a range. If the range somehow shifted to the high end this would cause your surge. it would be a screwdriver slot on the outside of the case.cw increase ccw decrease. yours is set too high or cw.
I work the screw back and forth several times in case dirt entered the cruise module.

ENGINE SURGING COULD BE WEAK FUEL PUMP, STOPPED UP FUEL FILTER,BAD TORQUE CONVERTER SOLENOID OR TORQUE CONVERTER. OR FAULTY TPS.

I would first replace the FUEL FILTER. If problem persists, make sure exhaust is not partially clogged like a clogged catalytic converter. Hope this helps

it could be a valve. or it could be a worn camshaft and lifters.
