Question about 1994 Pontiac Bonneville

Auto Transmission slips to neutral - slight grinding noise Pontiac 1994 se bonneville

Pontiac 6 cyl front wheel drive
Has been driving great.

In the space of about 3 days the car started to slip in to neutral and then not go back into gear unless I coasted to a stop and then turn the car off and on.

Now Car only goes into gear (r OD D or 123) if cold and then starts slipping to neutral in the first 5 mins. I have to stop and turn the car off. then it works again for a few mins.

There is a slight grinding noise but hard to define where it is coming from.

SOURCE: 1st gear slipping at start. reverse and other

Have you checked the trani fluid ?
It could be slipping just enough to notice in 1st gear beause that is the most resistance..
A slip is a slip..
Or it could be that the bands are warn in only first gear - wich would cause damage before long..
Some shops give free estimates..

Is there a bearing or bushing on the shaft that the left axle slides onto on a 1999 Bonneville se?

i have been fooled by this one way to many times. when a wheel bearing or hub assesembly is making noise, it will sound like it is comming from the other side. i do not know why this is. but one test will prove if and which one. when growling noise occurs, notice, when turning left or right, does noise get louder and quieter as you turn? if so then it is wheel bearing. when turning left the right side will make more noise. when turning right the left side will make more noise. if always the same then, tires or transmission need addressing. the cv axle does not make a growling noise, unless front wheel drive car does not move, it makes a clicking or poping noise. sorry but at least you dont have to replace other axle

My 200 pontiac bonniville transmission just quit

it wouldn't hurt to have the filter and fluid changed however the rain water may have gotten in a sensor and disabled the transmission then when it dried out it started working again

2004 Pontaic Bonneville humming noise wheel bearing?

I had a similar problem, when turning to the right or on a right curve, the noise would go away. After some research I found it was the left wheel bearing assembly. I replaced it and the problem is gone. Therefore, check the wheel bearing assembly. You may have to replace it.
