Question about 1992 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Transmission is not engaging when warm. I checked the fluid and it seems to be fine but the car does have kind of a high pitch whirling sound in the engine. If I turn the car off and let it sit for a few seconds and then start it again then the gears will engage for a very short time.

My daughter has a 92 Accord. We recently replaced the radiator, checked online, and found out that tjere is a little valve on the back of the engine that must be opened to let air escape or it will overheat because of the trapped air. I just googled my problem and got a bunch of reponses. I even found a "shop manual" that the mechanics use. Exploded diagrams. everything. Try Google!

Clutch noise

Bearing noises in a clutch system are easily distinguished by running a few simple tests. Start the engine and leave the transmission in neutral. If a transmission makes noise when it is in neutral it is often a worn input shaft bearing. Now depress the pedal until the clutch just engages. This is the point where the release bearing is just contacting the pressure plate fingers. If you begin to hear a squealing sound this is likely a worn release bearing. If a whirling noise is present when the clutch pedal is fully depressed it is probably the pilot bearing.

I have a 91 honda accord with an automatic trans. & when i shift into reverse it refuses to engage & makes a high pitch gear slipping grinding sound ! NOT GOOD ! ,I just replaced the transmission con

Definitely not good. The transmission is slipping internally due to worn gears and clutch packs. It will have to come out for rebuilding, IMO. Have a transmission shop check it out.
Good luck.

Roar on acceleration from stop, once it makes the first shift, seems to be fine. Possibly low on fluid? Is this transmission serviceable?

Yes the transmission is serviceable. Let the engine warm up and then check your fluid level. If the fluid is dark, smells burnt, or feels gritty you should change the fluid and filter. Sounds like a clogged filter making first gear slip. Watch your tach and see if it revs high on take off this will show if you are slipping in first gear.

Makes high pitched sound when starting. doesn't want to go into gear

Have you checked the transmission fluid? I believe the problem is within the transmission, because it wont go into gear. A whining noise, or high pitch noise, can be caused by low transmission fluid, which allows air to get in the transmission lines, or it could be a bad transmission pump. This is for a automatic transmission, since it is what I believe that you have in your car.

Sound like a jet engine when you get about 30 mph it continues when you let off gas it seems to disipate as soon as you give it gas it starts again

I am assuming you mean a high pitched whine. a high pitched whine is usually a sign of low fluid. Check your transmission fluid. Then check your differential fluid. the plug in the middle of the diffrential, remove it and stick your finger in there, you should be able to feel oil. If you dont then you need to add some gear oil.

2004 Dodge 2500 diesel, manual trans. noise/whistle

If your certain the noise is from the transmission, you need to take this vehicle to a shop you trust. It sounds as though the fluid pump in the transmission is either starving for fluid, due to a blocked strainer, or the pump is suffering a bearing failure. If you continue to run this vehicle, you stand the chance of stranding yourself, or burning the clutches from a lack of fluid. Good Luck.
