Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Jeep erradic in shifting

While driving the transmission shifts out of overdrive. Shifts out of third and the torque converter will engage and disengage. The RPM will fluctuate 100 RPM several times and will jump to 3,000 RPM on the open road. The transmission was rebuilt. The tests were done but the transmission is doing what the computer is telling it to do. This does not occur all the time. This jeep has a 318 engine and is full time 4X4. It has 177,000 miles on it.

mines is doing similar things. it shifts from 1st to 2nd real quick, then it stays in 2nd until i completely remove my foot from the accelerator. then when it goes to 3rd its not there for long before fropping to OD and drops the RPMs to under 1000, making it seemed bogged down. any help would be appreciated. mines a 96 grand cherokee, straight 6, 4.0 litre., 2WD. i only have 94000 miles and have only made 2 payments.

I would look into replacing the VSS which is the vehicle speed sensor, it is the input that tells the transmission when to go into overdrive and the torque converter to lock up, also make sure the connector is clean and tight to the sensor, this part is located on the side of the trans where the speedo cable would go.

1997 ford escort quit shifting onto overdrive

The OD solenoid in the transmission or the transmission control module is defective. It's also possible the torque converter clutch plates are worn. That's where over drive comes from

You have a short to ground in the internal wiring harness. The first thru third shifts are done hydralicly. The SMEC then applies a ground to the overdrive solenoid for fourth gear and the TCC solenoid for torque converter lockup.

Shifts in and out of overdrive

This sound like you are feeling the transmissions torque converter going in and out of lock up. When the torque converter goes into lock up it feels like a shift . One way to tell if it is the converter you are feeling is to push the od button disabling overdrive and see if it still does it. The converter will still go into lock up .

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

Jeep erradic in shifting

Check the adjustment on the brake switch. If the brake switch is not seated properly it will engage when hitting bumps and tell the tranny to come out of overdrive.

1995 jeep laredo overdrive is not shifting

Your overdrive should kick in at about 45mph, pretty much at or about 2000rpm. To see if it engaged, lightly touch the brake pedal and it will disengage. It should also disengage when you mash the pedal down to go into passing gear, and re-engage when conditions "normalize" again. You can tell that it has engaged because the tach will drop a few hundred rpms. If it's not doing this, a simple trans oil change (with filter) may correct the problem. OD is activated by a shift solenoid on the valve body that may be a bit gummed up.
95's show a shift control module on some diagrams I've seen, but not on others. I read this as a possible "half-year change" So you may or not have one. If you do, I'd check that as well!
