1995 H1 Problem

Hi There,
I trust this finds you well. My name is Ray and I am one of only two Hummer H1 owners in South Africa. As you can imagine there are no service centres here and I import all my bits and pieces to perform maintenance. Usually the servicing of my vehicle is pretty simple, however, I have had a recent water (coolant) leak that has baffled me. PLEASE COULD YOU HELP. The leak is coming from a pipe that sits inside the blower housing on the passenger side and it drains the coolant tank every time the engine runs! I have photos that I could send. It is not the overflow from the water tank, but rather some sort of overflow for the air-conditioner. The worst of the problem is that I can't open the plastic housing behind which the suspect pipe sits. Any ideas? I would really appreciate the help as I can't get H1 help locally!
Regards,

Raymond du Plooy

I have a coolant leak also that is coming from the heater core - leaking into the passenger side. I had the heater core box cover removed and need to replace the heater core. The box/cover that in came in was pretty beat up. I need to find a new box in order for the heater core to work. Does anyone know where to find such a part. I have a 1996 H1 Hummer. Thanks. Max....

If you are needing to work on your hummer yourself you might wanna pick up the service/parts manual. I bought mine off ebay on CD-ROM and it made everything a hell of alot easier. Here is the link to the manual i bought. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HUMMER-H1-Service-Parts-Repair-Factory-Shop-Manual_W0QQitemZ230306462496QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Manuals_Literature?hash=item230306462496&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 or just search for Hummer Repair Manual on ebay. Its a must have. I feel your pain on fixing these damn trucks.

Oh and the problem you are having is a bad heater core. They go bad and spew sweet smelling coolant into the cabin on the passenger side.

Hi raymond,

it could just be the overflow of the air conditioning. it could just be plain water which is the water condensate from the air conditioner.

look at the engine compartment firewall, find that hose and insert a long stick that can be inserted and you might un clogged the drain line.

if you are loosing coolant from the thing you are saying and you are definite that it is coolant water and not just plain water, then the heater core could have gone bad and leaking and you need to bring it down for repair or replacement.

have you been adding water to your radiator every time you use the car? if not, then im 90 percent it could just be a clogged air conditioning drain.

tnx 4 using fixya,

I have similar problem on my 96 h1 but I have 2 keep adding water 2 radiator. What could that b besides possible heater core problems?

  • francis rivero Sep 23, 2011

    Hello H_Bond,

If you are adding water to the radiator, then it could be a heater core.

To diagnose it, run the engine with out an A/C, then observe if there would be water coming out of the drain of the A/C or even inside the vehicle and if you do, then you have a bad heater core.

But if you do not find any water leaking inside or on the A/C drain pipe, then it could be coming out some where else and you need to find it. Check also the radiator cap. Sometimes, water is just leaking out on the cap if the seal is no longer good.

I have a h1 hummer that will not start i have changed the glow plugs and the controler also the box on the injecter pump. I am geting fuel and the glow plugs are working. The hummer has set for a year....

Diesel fuel doesn't go bad like gasoline, at least not as fast. I've been around diesels in construction equipment and sometime a machine will sit for a couple years and still start right up. You have other problems. I don't know that much about the Hummer diesels but, Ford uses a high pressure oil pump to fire the injectors. The main oil pump supplies oil to the high pressure oil pump reservoir and then the high pressure pump supplies oil to the injectors. If Hummer uses a similar system the reservoir may have drained down and there is no oil for the high pressure pump to pump. Ford has plug where a person can fill that reservoir manualy if necessary. Maybe try cranking it some more, don't crank it more than 10-15 seconds at a time. Walk away from it for 10 minutes or so, then try again, make sure you let the glow plugs cycle. If it don't start after a half dozen tries, you may have to have a mechanic look at it. I'm sorry I can't be more help.

HUMMER H1 1996 NOT SHIFTING OUT OF 1ST GEAR

youre going to need to take it to either a hummer dealer or a reputable and trusted transmission shop. these are general motors transmissions and do not cost a lot to rebuild. the only difference in price is whether on this year you have the 350cid gas or 6.5 na motor. wish i had better news but remember that transmission is constantly trying to move 8500lbs. service every 15- 20,000 miles. let me know if further assistance is necessary. i am certified with am general.

Hi want to install a aftermarket stereo in a 99 hummer h1 with a monsoon factory radio in it anybody have a wiring diag?

it is very common to do so however as a h1 tech myself i do not recomend such. it was by design that these monsoon systems drown out some of the decibles created by the diesel engine. if you still decide to do so i can get my manual out of storage and tell you which one are which. email me at iambanshee74@yahoo.com

Depends on your driving habits. One of the best indicaters if you have never added brake fluid is the level in your master cyclinder. Rotors: if you feel a pulsation in the brake pedal under normal breaking.
