Question about 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

1 Answer

Transmission slipping While driving after about 10 min. the trans will slip causing the rpm's to go up. Then when you stop the car acts like it is in 2nd or 3rd when trying to go again and there is a whining noise when you hit 30 to 35 the noise goes away and the trans seems to be fine. I have even tried to downshift manually and start from a stop in 1st and the shift and it seems to do the samething?

There are several issues that need to be addressed. I imagine that the trans oil and filter have not been changed in a while so that is a first step in fixing the problem. trans oil and filter should be changed every 50,000 miles for atf oil and 75,000 for synthetic oil. old trans oil and clogged filters are #1 reason for trans slippage. another reason is the trans controle cable is out of adjustment and there fore the trans doesn't shift like it should this is something that needs to be looked at by a mechanic. third possibilty is either the check valves inside the trans valve body are gummed up or you have a failing torque converter. try and get that oil and filter changed and see if this helps solve it if not than you need to takeit to a shop and have the trans rebuilt.

Why Is My Automatic Transmission Slipping? If you have an automatic transmission and it "slips" while you are driving it-that is, the car engine revs without the power going to the wheels-the most common cause (though not the only possible cause) is low transmission fluid. If the slipping is caused by low fluid, it will get worse as the transmission gets hotter.
Why Is My Manual Transmission Slipping? A standard ("manual") transmission uses fluid too, but leaks aren't a common issue; a standard transmission could lose all its fluid and never slip at all, though eventually it would lock up while driving down the road. If you have a standard transmission, and it's slipping-the engine revs but it doesn't transmit power to the wheels-the problem is usually in the clutch.
Further down in the article I discuss how to diagnose this problem.

Reving up when in gear driving

check your trans fluid, if its been a while flush it and change the filter if its reving and your speed doesnt change (slipping) if your speed changes check the TPS and speed sensors on the trans as well when you change fluid.

Transmission slips in 2nd gear winds up rpms to 7000

Any slipping that you notice & RPM Flairs, the damage
is already done

You can not drive any vehicle more than 10 miles to home
or a shop, when they slip

Whatever was the start & cause of some of the problems,
now won't matter much, as there is a very good change you
will need to have the trans rebuilt

You could have a tran shop check it out,but it will
most likely have to come out to even get at any
solenoids,etc

When driving at 45-55mph the "d" on the dash that indicates the gearshift is in drive will suddenly dissapear. This is the indication that when I come to a stop light the transmission will now slip trying...

It's possible there is an electronic fault or a more serious internal mechanical condition causing the transmission to slip as it warms up. After parking for a bit the transmission cools down and often they will work better for a while until they warm up again. To start with I would have the transmission controller checked to see if there are any service codes and then have it test driven by a transmission specialist when the problem is occuring to get his opinion on it. It does sound a lot like a slipping clutch pack from what you describe however which would require the transmission to be removed to fix the problem. Good luck and hope this helps out a bit!

Get the pump pressure checked in your transmission. It sounds to me like you have low trans pressure. It will act like a slipping clutch in a manual. Also check your trans filter. It will amaze you the difference it makes when you change a clogged filter. Good luck.

sounds like your trans. is going out try using a transmission fluid additive called LUCAS STOP SLIP it will temporarily fix it for smooth driving although some people have reported their slipping permanently stop.
