I have a big problem with my automatic 1997 Ford Contour, I have recently noticed that when I drive it for about 15 min, it downshifts and revs really hard and shifts back up and feels normal once again. I took it to the mechanic and was told it was a switch or somekind of sensor inside the trans. and are charging me about 900 dollars just to replace that thing. I want to know if anyone can help me with this situation. Please I need help my life is at risk just kidding.
I had the same problem. A $35.00 Neutral Safety Switch took care of it. Takes about 15 or 20 minutes tops to replace it. Everyone I spoke too wanted to rebuild the tranny for about 122 to 15 hundred. I did a lot of research on here and found the problem.

You have to drop the transmission pan with gasket to get to the transmission filter. About 5 quarts or so of transmission fluid will come out when you drop the pan. You have to buy a new transmission gasket. Do not reuse the old gasket.
I'm assuming you have an automatic transmission. It sounds like there is an internal fault in the transmission itself. You'll have to take out the trans and take it to a shop to have it repaired, unless you're experienced on this kind of work and have the special tools and equipment required.
this code indicates a problem with the transmission range selected switch, this switch is on the transmission case where the shift cable attaches, when u select a gear it sends a signal to the computer control that u want lets say Reverse by sensing the range selector switch feedback, replace the switch will most likely cure the code, then clear the code and drive a few miles.
Hello trader121: My name is Roger and I will help you. You did not say which motor was in your car. So if you have a v-6 engine with a automatic transmission it will hold 9.1 qts. If you have a standard transmission it will hold 8.9 qts. Should your car have a 4 cyl.DOHC engine then the following will work. With automatic transmission 7.5 qts. With standard transmission 7.0 qts. All capacities are based on a completely empty coolant system.
