Question about 1988 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Car won't begin to turn over.

The interior lights will not come on even with jumper cables hooked to a good battery. There's not a sound from the starter or anything.

Try using commercial grade jumper leads and not the made in china **** you have bought in the euro shop ,they look good with thick cables ??look closely and you will see the actual cable is just about strong enough to to charge a battery ,let alone jump start a detroit jugernaut.you will need cables as thick as your middle finger minimum in pure copper with a connector between the two claws .

Why my car is dead after sitting for 3 days. when first hooked up jumper cables the interior lights came on then went off and wouldnt even turn over

If your battery is dead after 3 days it's probably getting stuffed or else you left something on. Anyway jump starting should work regardless. How good are your jumper leads? You need a pretty heavy set to start a car not those skinny things you get at super cheap auto stores. Hook them up and start car you're jumping off and run it at a high idle for about 5 min then try and start your car. That should put a base charge into your battery and it should go. If not buy a new battery.

It sounds like you blew fuses other than just the main fuse. Hooking the battery up wrong can destroy major components as well, like the starter, battery, Computer, moduals. You might need a good shop....

Batterys are rated by their cold cranking amps even if it test good its how it performs by giving a load. the voltage may be good but the amps (the strength) of the battery may be weak, check the terminals high corrosion can be lurking in the cable or terminal, you say you dont have to hook it for more than a second it sound like a bad battery terminal

Car won't crank, the interior lights wont come on

This sounds like a dead battery or dirty connection, the first thing is to see if the battery is dead, hook up to another car using jumper cables, you will need to let the cables stay on for about 10 mins with all doors and key off to help build it up so the car will start.

Not getting any power to my interior components but all the fuses are good under the hood. The engine cranks but wont start.

Have you checked the battery? How old is tge battery in the car? Do your headlights or ANYTHING work? What happens when you try to start the car - does it make any sounds (like a click click click noise?)or just nothing? Please post follow up. If you have a set of jumper cables you can at least check by hooking up the jumper cable to a running car - if your interior lighys, etc work with the vehicle on jumper cables and/or will start now you need to check tge battery

Can't start car even if i try the jumper cable.........

If you have a multimeter, connect it to your battery, and select an appropriate DC voltage range. On my multimeter, I use the 20volt setting.

If your battery shows 12-13.8 volts, then it is not the issue. If your battery voltage is low, then you will probably need a new battery. A flat battery can also indicate that the alternator is not recharging your battery properly, but it could also just mean that your battery is old and needs replacing.

If your engine wont turn over, and if your battery is good, it could be a faulty starter motor.

Those jump start packs need to be charged often, or the battery inside them can stop working. It is possible that your jump starter pack is also broken.

Try jump starting the car from another vehicle, with jumper leads. If you know your battery is dead, you could also just replace it with another one.

Ignition

Sounds like the battery is dead, you have just enough power to have the lights come on, but no cranking of the starter. Try putting the battery on a trickle charger, or hook up jumper cables to another car which is running. Let it run with the jumper cables connected for two mintues before you try and start your car.
