If all the pulleys line up ,then problem is the a/c pump is full of **** and rust and its sticking causing the belt to burn up and if the pulley shaft is worn the it can turn slightly throwning the belt off.to repair this take vehicle to an a/c specialist as this sort of repair is beyond the weekend mechanic and requires special tools in the way of a machine to extract the gas before any repair can take place.the gas used on older vehicle is R12 and is extremely toxic to the ozone layer,R134 is not as bad but it is still dangerous, plus the pressure used in the system which can cause blinding so do not touch it ....

Check to see if there is a pulley that does not turn in the belt path, fix the affected part. Check to see if the belt is properly routed, see belt routing diagram uder the hood. visually inspect to see if the belt is running "true", or in-line. Some times when a sub-assembly such as the alternator is replaced the new part is slightly different in manufacture so as to make a problem with the drive belt alignment, and some minor tweeking can fix the problem. also make sure any conectors(bolt's) are tight.

Make sure battery is good, battery terminals and cables/connectors connected to alternator correctly and belts adjusted to manufactured specifications. Check to see where the whining noise is coming from, if still present. If not the belts or pulleys it could be the starter.

Why is my 98 mitsubishi eclipse 2.0 non turbo is making a horrible squeaking sound about 2 minutes of running engine? Was told it could be my power steering pulley. What does this mean? Do I tighten i

The mechanic who did the work may have gotten coolant on the drive belts or not sufficiently adjusted the belt tension . I'd replace the belt especially if the sides of the belt are shiny.

Sounds like you lost your drive belt on the vehicle. Check to see if you still have a drive belt. Without a drive/serpentine belt you will get exactly what you have described. I'm just guessing but this is the first thing I would check. Hope it's something that simple for you and that you didn't get your engine too hot and I was able to help.
