Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Delay in startup

When I turn the key, it takes about four or five seconds for the Jeep to actually start. You can hear it turn, and it hasn't failed to start yet, but it consistently takes a while for the engine to turn -- unless I just turned it off, then (most of the time) it turns right away.

I took it to a shop, they ran a diagnostic test on all the electrical components and it showed no faults. I still had them do a complete tune-up (spark plugs, oil, coolant, filters etc.). Still, same problem. They said they couldn't find anything wrong with it... but yet, it still takes a while to start.

If the engine turns over but just dont fire up it sounds as if the fuel pump is losing prime ....have the fuel pressure tested...you may need to leave it overnight so the shop can test it first thing...the pump may be going bad

When i turn the key i just hear a click and then a few sconds later it will usually turn over. Sometimes i have to turn the key multiple times before jeep will start. click, a delay and then it starts.

You need to clean your battery cables.
Try vinegar and sandpaper to get a better contact.
Most jeeps need about 500 amps to start, a dirty cable will lower the amperage the cable can carry

Change battery everything gone dead will not take land rover disc

Firstly, pop a new battery in the fob.
Now we can enter the EKA.
Close all the doors.
Turn the key in the driver door lock to the unlock position and hold there for at least 5 seconds until the alarm sounds once. Then return to centre - always ensure you return to centre and do not delay more than 10 seconds between turns, or hold in the position for more than 5 seconds or you will reset to the start. Turn to full extent of travel.
1st Digit turn to unlock the number of times specified.
2nd Digit turn to lock the number of times specified.
3rd Digit turn to unlock the number of times specified.
4th Digit turn to lock the number of times specified.
Finally turn to unlock once more. If it is correct a double bleep will sound (single bleep is incorrect code)
You now have a 5 minute delay - don't open any doors. The anti-theft indicator will continue flashing once every 2 seconds for the five minute period. When this goes out, open the door and start within 30secs.
After 3 failed attempts, the security system invokes a delay period of 10 mins during which the system will not accept any further attempts to enter a code.

Delay in Start on 2000 Grand Cherokee Ltd 4.7 engine

To check the solenoid internal contact, you'd need to remove the starter and remove the solenoid cover. Inside you will find a brass wheel that contacts the positive battery lug. You can remove the wheel and reverse it and turn the lug 180 degrees, providing new contact surfaces. Seems that you've done just about everything else. You can also use a test light attaching it at different points to find where the actual delay is occurring. Normally security will allow cranking but will not allow starting.

Staring issue... 1999 Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder(manual tran). recently I've noticed that in the morning or after it's sat for while, when I turn the key the engine cranks for a couple of seconds before...

instead of cranking, just leave key on for a minute...if there isn't a delay starting after that it may be a bad drainback valve in the pump. You can either live with it for a while or replace pump...but check that it's not an injector leaking into engine first.(usually if that's the case, leaving key on will lengthen start time and give a puff of black smoke on startup)

Dosn't turn over

First, verify the actual voltage at the battery with a voltmeter. Second, make sure terminal connections are clean and secure at both terminals and the other ends of the battery cables as well. Also find the source of the noise you hear...If it's coming from a relay, find out which one now, before it completely fails and is more dificult to locate. (do not change it till you verify all connections are good and actual voltage is good.
There are a few more tests you can do but do these first.

Well, you may not need to take it to a dealer if you have the EKA code.
Firstly, pop a new battery in the fob. Get the vehicles battery charged up or changed.
DELAYED STARTUP -- 2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO

Our Jeep(s) seem to have problems with the battery clamps much more than I have ever had with other vehicles and often, if the battery was good, cleaning the darned clamps and posts would return it to reliable starting again.
Weak batteries and crummy clamps often only show up during starting because of the vast difference between the current needed to run anything else on a car (the total running current is normally under 20 amps) and the huge surge the starter needs which can approach 200 amps. This high current exposes a weak battery or poor terminal contact real quick.
