Trouble shifting into 4wheel drive

I have a 95 grand cherokee with the 6 cyl.. My front drive shaft blew out on me way back when and i was running with no front shaft for a few months till i got the ujoints changed out. I just now put the shaft back on tonight and now i cant get it to shift into part time 4 or full time 4wheel drive at all. Its almost like the transfer case jammed up on the inside? I checked out the linkage and even took the linkage off the Tcase and the linkage works fine. But when the linkage is hooked up, it wont go into 4 at all. i tried to shift into 4 wheel manually when the linkage was off and it didnt seem like it wanted to budge. Am i missing something here or what? Is there a trick to putting this into 4 wheel drive or what?

artic429, which transfer case is in your jeep? if your not sure there is a round tag on the transfer case to identify it get back to me and see if we can determine your problem, you say the front drive shaft blew out, what happened or what were the circumstances?

I will get back to you on that but i think it was the 272 case. The back knuckle was the one that blew out and it was drove so hard after that , that it actually cracked the old trasfer case in half !!!!! I put the new transfer case in and put the old shaft back on to see if it would engage in 4 wheel and it did and then i took the shaft back off till i got it fixed. when i put the new shaft on it didnt want to go into 4 wheel. thats when i tried to engage it manually without the linkage hooked up and it wouldnt go in. I didnt know if i had to be moving for it to go into 4 wheel or not. Im not familiar with jeeps at all but i am good with wrenches. I will get back with more specs on the transfer case.

Was it the rear u-joint on the front shaft that broke and did it damage the linkage?

I have a 95 grand Cherokee orvis I I blew the front cvjoint drive shaft apart how does the top head go together ? Bearings the slotted crown . How does it stay together I have it apartt along with new...

the part that the bearings run in is possibly that worn it will not hold together. I have repaired CV Joints before and you usually replace the whole knuckle at the end of the shaft or exchange the shaft for a reconditioned one.

Front drive axle not working

There is a vacuum assisted cylinder that engages the front axle when in 4 wheel drive. should be on outside of axle housing on passenger side. Check hoses to unit. Set E-brake car in park. With car running have some one else shift car into 4wheel while you watch and listen to unit. There is a re-build kit available if unit does not work

How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps

Why does jeep only go in part-time 4-wheel drive and not full time?

Are you having trouble shifting into 4wd?

Some of the GrandCherokees come with full time 4wheel drive viscous coupling inside of the transfer case and some have teh 242 TC which allow you siwtch between 2wd, 4hi, N, 4lo.

How can i convert grand cherokee laredo from 2wheel to 4wheel.i wana ask you the process

First you need a transfer case, then you need a shorter rear drive shaft. You need a front diff. same ratio as the rear diff. you need a front drive shaft. You need different trailing arms. Should I go on ?
