My rear hatch is stuck like its locked but its not how can i get it open to work on it

You will need to pull away the top of the inside cover (area under the bottom of rear window) from inside the cargo area. Pull as many screws as you can easily, and pull out on the area of the interior cover and slide your arm inside to grab the lock rod. Once the rod is grabbed, slide it to the left and right while someone operates the outside door handle. The hatch should unlock and open to allow total removal of the interior panel and allow access for repair and inspection.

My back hatch door wont open. Ive tried just about everything under the sun. How do I get it to open?

Try bracing bottom piece of the plastic that surrounds the rear door handle with one hand while at the same time pulling on the rear door handle to try opening the door. Of course you will try this after unlocking the door with the unlock switch or key cylinder.

What is he best way to fix the latch/handle on the rear hatch door? The handle operates (moves), but the latch does not release.

The screws securing the latch mechanism may have come loose. I had this problem. I had to remove all the screws from the rear hatch panel, within the luggage compartment. I pulled the panel away from the bottom of the window, bent it slightly, enough to get my arm in there to reach down to pull on the lever that releases the latch. grab a flashlight and a partner. have your partner turn the key to "open" and pull on the rear door handle. with the flashlight you will be able to see or feel the rod moving. pull up on this rod. After you get the door open spray some lube on the lock mechanism and adjust as needed. The rod that you pulled on can be adjusted

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. A power cord from something I was hauling got stuck under the rear hatch and now it won't open. The handle moves freely, but the door won't open and the key won't turn.

I'll tell you from experience this is no fun to fix unless you are two feet tall. You've got to get into the rear cargo area and remove the inner panel of the hatch. It "may" be necessary to break a little of the plastic off depending on it's elasticity. Once the panel is off take a flashight and locate the latch release linkage. With one hand(usually the left hand) pull the linkage forcefully to the left as you face the hatch from inside. This should release the hatch then you'll be able to Good luck, Dana P.S. It goes without saying you should bring a flashlight with you.

1999 cherokee sport rear doors wont open

don't know if this is going to be any help at all. But we purchased our 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee a year ago and I just now learned that the rear window even opens. Did you find the switch that makes it pop open? If not it is just under the ridge under the window but above the handle to open the hatch. You just put your hand on it and push upwards. Hope this helps!!
HOPE IT HELPS *I went by body shop for this same type issue with a 98 grand cherokee * the body shop guy removed the plastic sheild and adjusted a cable that interacts with the locking mechanism, took 5 seconds, cost me $20 for his time, works good as new.

98 Hatch won't open! Help!

Dear Customer,

Do this steps to open your's

1. Straighten out a metal coat hanger and bend a small hook on one end.
2. Remove the top screws on the inner pannel.
3. Gently pull the top of the pannel open about an inch and shine a flashlight inside the hatch. Mine has the pop up glass which makes this a little easier.
4. Slide the hooked end of the coat hanger inside the hatch while a friend works the release handle up and down.
5. Inside the hatch, at the bottom of course, you will see the release arm moving. Simply hook the arm with the coat hanger and pull up!
6. It may take a few tries, but the hatch will open easily.

you will able to open your hatch in less than 15 minutes by yourself not required 1 more single person. Once the hatch opens, remove the remaining screws and you will see that the release arm is adjustable. The arm is threaded and simply pops into a metal clamp. Pop it out of the clamp, pull up on the arm to take up as much slack as possible, and pop the arm back into the clamp. Replace the inner pannel and your done.

so you got your hatch open now,
