Car loses power while driving

Once I was driving my car in the rain, then it jerks a bit and lose power (windshield wiper stopped working, power steering stopped working, car decelerated, brake stopped working, turning signal stopped working; headlights, emergency signals, dashboard lights and handbrake still worked). I have to pull over my car and restart the engine, then everything starts working again. What's the problem?

This happens with ours too, it usually happens after the car has been running awhile (never first thing when we go out).

It happened more often during the summer when the AC was on, but now it does it without AC running.

I looked in the manual, and have tried to find engine diagrams online, but can't find one...where exactly is the distributor cap?

Check Engine light came on recently, and this problem is occurring more often since then (was doing it occasionally prior).

I have also heard that there was a recall on this year/model for faulty ignition switches causing this same problem.

My car's ignition switch was already replaced during the recall, but it happens that it was indeed the source of the problem, as my car was exhibiting all the problems described on this page:

    http://techauto.awardspace.com/ignitions...

I bought the replacement part from MagAuto (~$37 + tax, free S/H), had a friend helped me with the replacement (took like 1.5 hours as there was one screw behind the steering wheel which was super hard to get to), and now the car has been running great without shutting down while driving! When I took apart the old ignition switch, it was indeed worn out quite significantly. So you may definitely want to give that a try.

I own a 2002 vw polo a few weeks ago I had a complete electrical failure while waiting in the middle of a busy road to turn right hazard warning lights wouldn't even work after a couple of minutes the car restarted and I haven't had another problem diagnostics showed nothing the battery terminals were a bit rusty and hunky so we cleaned them up. Yesterday while driving home in the pouring rain my wipers decided to stop working then restarted then stopped 5 times on a 2 mile journey no obvious reason for this. Help losing faith in this one time reliable car

My battery is fine, the cables are fine. Car starts with no problem, but randomly, the navigation system and the radio lose power and need the codes. Sometimes, the power locks won't operate - start car to find that the navigation system and radio is down. Again - no problem starting the car.

You must replace the distributor cap and rotor button- easy fix. Do not mix wires up. Message me I will guide you through it. definitely know my stuff here.

You can follow up with a call to any reputable repair shop- but you must focus on both issues as any loss of fire to engine will cause all of the following symptoms:power steering stops working, car decelerates, brake stopped working, turning signal stopped working- all require proper firing of engine . There is a part in the ignition system at the distributor which can overheat thus causing signal to be interupted to coil and then spark plugs do not fire . You turn off engine - it cools down and then resarts as normal. Problem 2 ignition- because of close proximity of positive and negative inside . Metal particles from frequent key use and (bad metal- knock-off keys) deposit inside and cause overheating between contacts. Again causing all of the above .Just for the record - causes a lot of car fires.Good luck

Apparently the problem was with the Rev Limiter? We finally took it in, and that was what they found to be wrong with it. Since it's been replaced, the car has been fine. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Hi Rockandroll, Underground, or old timer? I think I would have the fuel filter replaced and have the fuel delivery of the pump checked. Once you've done that have the fuel rail pressure regulator checked too. Regards John

Everytime it rains, when i put the car in drive or reverse the radio cuts off and windshield wipers stop working. When its in park or neutral, they both work fine. What is the problem?

Ours was doing the same thing. The windshield had been replaced by the previous owner and was not sealed well. We had the windshield replaced correctly and that took care of the problem. The water was leaking down into the fuse box and creating havoc.
