Ignition switch is bad ... you should NOT be able to remove the key while running (safety feature on all US cars since 1970's).     Brake switch is hooked into ignition then to shift lever to prevent moving from park unless ke is on and brake is depressed ... your switch (or wiring, but probably switch) is shorted out and/or maybe has mechanical damage (from when the thief tryed to start it with a screwdrive?)

Are you talking about the Foot Pedal Assembly?
Has a couple of bolts attaching it to bottom of dash and the cable running to the rear brakes. Hardest part might be unhooking the cable.

Sounds like you may have damaged the parking claw. Put the parking brake on when you park on an incline, You may need a new parking gear or gear claw.

Sounds like your shift interlock solenoid has failed.

This is what releases the shifter when you put your foot on the brake.

Either the switch at the top of the brake pedal is out of adjustment or failed - or the shifter solenoid is bad.

You should be able to manually unlock the solenoid.
Look for a plug near PARK
Remove the plug and insert a pencil or pen to unlock the solenoid - then you can shift.

Brake light on 2001 chevy blazer LT 2wd

When my blazer did this they had to replace part of the wiring harness in the steering wheel. It took forever for them to get the parts because we live in nowhereville, but once it was in it works again and no problems. I had to take it to the actual chevy dealer because none of the other places had a clue. good luck.
