Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

Turn signals have quit working

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer, and the turn signals have gone out. They were working on and off for a while but today no signals. I tried manually using them, hearing the clicking inside but did not see any light. Is it just a switch or something easy and not costly?

I had the bulbs checked and they worked fine. A friend of mine at work, who works on cars and trucks alot came to the conclusion that it was the turn signal switch/lever on the steering column. Some other searching that I did came to the same conclusion. I will be contacting the dealership today about the part but my friend is going to install it.

    Thank you for your response.

The problem turned out to be the turn signal switch under the steering column. My husband was able to repair for the cost of the part, being $20.00. Thanks to all who offered solutions, and I will definitely come back the next time I have a problem.

Many times the turning signals will quit because a bulb has gone out. Have the bulbs checked first.

I would try to get one from a junk yard. It would be a lot cheaper.

Need a wiring diagram for that turn signal system.

Do the 4 way hazards work? If so check the column switch. If not check the fuses and then the flasher unit itself.

Does any have a wiring schematic for a 98 ford explorer xlt?

Best thing is to do a Web search titled "1998 ford explorer wiring diagram". This will give you results which include fuse boxes and power boxes and color coded wiring routing. Check for other items that are on the same fuse as the turn signals to see if they work. The turn signal flasher unit could also be bad.

I have a 1998 ford explorer, The turn signals only work when you slam the tilt steering wheel all the way up and then you have to hold it there, Then once I let go the stop working...Please can anyone help...

Yes, you need a new turn signal switch. Tilt columns are kind of ******* switches for just the reasons you stated: Quick, forceful movements puts strain on wiring and switches..

Turn signal works most of the time, but not always 1998 Ford Explorer Sport??

Try changing the fuse....even if it looks fine. Then, the flasher....and last, the turn signal cam.....which is part of the turn signal arm assembly (you have to pull the steering wheel off).
