The ignition switch isn't hard to replace. Take the column covers off and you'll have to buy tamper proof torx bits to remove the mounting screws. Just unplug the old switch and plug in the new one. The new switch will have new mounting screws with it. It should only take you 20 minutes to replace it even if you've never done it before. Check the operation of the lock and tumbler as well. It's an easy replacement as well. This one only should take you 5 minutes.

is the earth cable giving a good engine and body contact.does your starter have two terminals and if so are they the right way around?is the battery any good?Is the engine able to be turned over by hand Make sure you have agood 12v supply to the starter solenoid when cranking the engine An engine test probe/light would be of a lot of use for you to do that test

I JUST HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM ON MY 2000 WINDSTAR SEL LAST WEEK..IT WAS JUST ELECTRICALLY DEAD..I CHECKED OVER THAT THING WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB AND COULD NOT AT FIRST FIND THE PROBLEM..WELL AS IT TURNS OUT, MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS BAD AND IT WAS CAUSING ALL THIS HAVICK !!! I REPLACED THE CLUSTER ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD TO PROGRAM IT BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD START DUE TO THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM..IM NOT SURE IF THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM BUT IT IS IDENTICAL TO MINE AND I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS..
P.S.-I GOT MY CLUSTER AT A JUNKYARD BECAUSE A NEW ONE CAN BE PRICEY !!

Your alternator should power everything when engine is running. Battery is only for start up. Test voltage with a multimeter when engine is running , should be 14V or more . Any less indicates low alternator output.
