It is the end clutch for the overdrive. You do not have to pull the trans to fix it! If you take it to a mechanic he will likely pull the tranny and charge you for it. Here is a step-by-step REPLACEMENT GUIDE for changing it. If taking your car to a mechanic you may want to make sure they are aware of the procedure so your not paying for unnecessary work(pulling the trans).

Sounds like overdrive or the torque converter is going out. The torque converter goes into lock up then the trans goes into overdrive.
Your owners manual should have a diagram of the engine compartment showing the dipstick. Is the check engine light on ?

What could it be

Hi:First check transmission fluid levels, if the are ok on quality and good level, could be a problem with the torque converter or valve solenoids.
Hope helps.

The Jimmy surges when it gets into overdrive like it is going from 4th to overdrive again and again. Could this be the torque converter?

yes it could be, try driving in 3rd gear and see if it still does it.
tcc still works in 3rd.
when was last full tuneup?

The car will not shift into overdrive? All other gears work perfect? The problem just started tonight on my way home from my sisters. I got on the expressway accelerated up to 70mph and it just stayed in...

There should be an electric solenoid on the side of the transmission that controls overdrive, if it is not the cause then the friction plates inside the transmission will need to be replaced.

No overdrive

sounds to me that the pistons in the valve body are sticking, try adding half a small bottle of dot3 brake fluid to the transmission,it will either make the o rings and seals swell or lubricate parts better than dextron 3,if the torque converter was bad it would either make alot of noise,or not deliver enough pressure to the clutch packs, through the pump,it could be a $3.00 fix, usually worked well on older Ford transmissions like the C6

it sounds like the mechanic didn't properly adjust the inhibitor switch and transmission control cable.
