Not a really good discription, but sounds like something I had before. What I found was that by cutting off the distributor holddown ear and replacing it with an old type hold down fork I could change the base timing and fool the cam sensor into thinking the cam was in a different location. It runs like a bear now! HOWEVER this is a quick fix.The underlying problem is that the timing chain has stretched further than the computer can compensate. I will be changing the chain as soon as I have the time.
Without better information I could be leading you astray. Make sure that the cap and rotor don't have moisture in there, and that the wires are in good condition (any sparking from them when you look at them in the dark?)
