Question about 1997 Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

1997 buick lesabre 3.8L

I just replaced the battery after taking it to Autozone to have it tested. Everything was fine and we got into the conversation of alternators. The kid offered to test the alternator as well and I agreed. When we tested it he said something to the effect of it's putting out 7.7 and normal is way higher than that. ( I cant' remember what he said the 7.7 was for).

I had an appointment to have the oil change at my local garage the following day anyways so this problem came just in time and I didnt' have to worry about making an appointment on a suprise breakdown and have to worry about getting to work. So I took it to my guys and after changing the oil and rotating the tires, he tested it. He turned it on and off several times, let it run while turning on every conceivable electric device in the car, Ran it while having all the stuff on around the block and said it's fine.

Feeling a little secure (little mind you), I drove it home and no troubles. Then as I was taking my neice home couple days later, I noticed that my battery gage dipped as it did before. Driving it was not bad but I notice that it dims and fades in and out at odd times.

What am I missing or what are my guys missing that could be the problem? Would it really be the alternator regardless of the brand new battery that was replaced? What would be something to ask to look for or what could I look for to advise them of the problem. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Car is turned off and the battery is being drained from somewhere. It is fine if I start it the next day but not if I wait two. The lights flicker all the time while we are driving it.

To test the alternator yourself; with engine running disconnect the positive battery cable. If the engine dies when cable is removed then the alternator is bad. If the engine continues to run then the opposite is true.

I reset the change oil light last night now my car won't start, 1997 buick lasber the battery was dead, thought that was it. Full charge battery now and it still won't start :( sandy

Have the battery load tested, even if you think the battery is fully charged it may not be any good, believe me on this. Autozone and other auto parts stores do battery testing for free.

97 Buick Lesabre, had emmisions test done (which it passed) as soon as leaving emmisions test check engine light came on. Any ideas what may have caused this?

Stop by any good parts store (Autozone, Advance, etc) and have them do a FREE OBII scan. It will read all your fault codes and more than likely light came on because of emission test. But have them read the faults and reset your light.

Wont start in hot temperatures

try your battery connections and grounds, Change the battery out for a new one bro. I am pretty sure that's what you need. Tested the battery and it was "fine" for other cars, but I had a feeling it was the problem, and replaced it anyway and all is fine now. Also have your alternator checked.

Car wont start

Check the starter and wiring coming to it.
Try to move them a litle to see if they are tight enough. Starter location you can find for free at
Autozone website.
