My 1998 Nissan won't start after changing altenator belt

If you changed the belt, that means that you have been having problems with your altenator. You battery is probably dead.

you will need a 14 mm wrench a flat head screw driver 3/8 ractchet 12 mm socket short 6 inch and 1 inch extension on the front of the motor is the altenator there is a tensioner on it losen the two bolts on the front of the altenator then with th 12 mm socket turn the tensioner bolt it is on the right side of the altenator you will be looking directly down on it once the belt is loose enough remove then for the power steering pump belt jack car up remove passenger side wheel there you will see a dust cover remove it after its removed you will see the crankshaft pulley to your left there is the pump losen the rear bolt on the pump and then the front one should also have tensioner like the altenator asemble back together in reverse order after you make the intial tension on belt run for about 30 sec to one minute recheck tension.

I replaced the alternator and battery, but the batt.and brake lights stay on. If i acclerate lights go off, when i reach the speed i want the lights come back on.

check for loose altenator belt. also check fluid level in the brake master cylinder. you can have the battery checked for free at any autozone or advance auto parts store. they can also check for bad altenator. don't be mislead by someone who is only out for money! have them checked please. the altenator belt only may be needed tightened! do not be a victim. have it checked for free. hope this helps and if you need further assistance please repost your question to fixya.com

It sounded like the bearings in the altenator were going out so replaced the altenator and it is still making the noise

you need a stheascope or a long metal object, like a screwdriver with at least a 24" shaft

remove the accessory belt
pick a pulley and spin it by hand
while spinning the pully in question use your tool and place it on the part of the pulley you are spinning

you'll know which pulley is the problem becuase you will get a growl from the bearing

most common suspect would be the accessory belt tensioner

You have a timing chain no belt. Changing is not necessary unless there is a failure. Water pump will need changing when it leaks.
